Losing my running and walking partner...and friend

Monday, February 17, 2014

Yesterday my Sammy went to doggie heaven. He had an aggressive tumor in his nose that spread and surgery wasn't an option, and radiation is iffy (only 10-20% success and his life would have been full of appointments we couldn't afford, and I did my research, the best success story the dog lived 6 mo. Longer and then passed.) Sammy lived a total of 14 wonderful years, and lasted 6 mo. after his diagnosis.

We rescued Sammy from the dog pound in Chicago. I told my husband I felt there was a dog there that needed us, and he went, blindly, looking for the one while I was at work. How could he choose from all of these dogs? They all needed and deserved homes. But one stood out because his cries were so loud and sounded human...actually it was more like a scream. We got Sammy and while he only cost us $30, it turned out he had pneumonia and was very sick, he ended up costing us almost $1,000 which gave us a good laugh. He was worth it, though. The most handsome dog, he loved burrowing under blankets and he loved being under my feet. When we got him I was unhealthy and obese, but as I grew healthier, I discovered that inside of me, and Sam, was a runner. He became my running partner and really took to it. Later, when he got sick, he slowed to walks. But he always loved going out, even on his last day here on this earth...he could only make it a house down, but he loved it the same.

I am devastated. But we had over two months more with him than we thought...we almost lost him a few days before Christmas...but our vet suggested giving him a steroid shot and that got him through..here's what Sammy got to enjoy these last few months...

A weekend in the city and getting pampered at the Hilton.

A duck dinner.

Many walks, including my old marathon training ground and michigan avenue

Seeing Marlo and Lucy dance

Watching episodes of dexter

Seeing Ralph the dog play piano on the muppets movie

Going sledding

Seeing the snowpocolpyse...twice

Celebrated Christmas Eve, Christmas, New Year's Eve and Valentines day

Stayed by my side while I attempted Pilates

Worked from home with me the two days the office was closed with his doggy bed outside my closet office

Had a custom doggy king cape made by Lucy

.since then he's been on steroids and had 3 more shots, but in the end we could tell he was in pain...hard for him to breathe at night...and we knew it was time.

Thank you, God, for being able to take our time saying goodbye...and thank you Sammy for being the most amazing dog and partner a girl could ask for. For teaching me more about love. For always being by my side. We will always love you, Sam.
