First Day of Keto

Monday, February 10, 2014

What an interesting diet. I spent the day finding the fattiest things I could to eat. Not going to lie, I'm not complaining. I ate delicious caprese salad soaked in olive oil, and feta stuffed jalapeno peppers, vegetarian chicken scallopini, and cucumber juice. It was a good day and very tasty. I'm not looking forward to the keto flu though. I don't know when that kicks in but it will probably be soon. I wanted to go to the gym today in case I didn't feel good tomorrow but we had to do a lot of running around.

My partner really wants to try this diet with me. I think the prospect of eating cheese, meat, butter, and eggs (he is definitely not vegetarian) is what is drawing him in. He picked up a good bunch of seafood and meat today in preparation. He has some bread and things to finish before he starts though. I hope this works. We've tried so many other things and eventually you start to wonder if you're just not meant to lose weight.

I've been drinking broth and so far I'm not getting the "flu" but holy, last night was a busy night. Apparently things are moving through my system rather quickly. I guess the extra addition of fat is greasing things up. That's okay, better than the alternative which I was concerned with because of the amount of cheese I am eating. I went from eating no cheese to eating a few ounces a day.

As for smoking, I was lucky. I quit smoking because I was bored with smoking and didn't like the taste anymore. That was after over a decade of regular smoking. Same thing happened with chewing my nails, I just woke up and didn't do it anymore. Maybe it will be the same thing with carbs.

KICK-SS is right - low sodium levels cause most of the flu symptoms, chiefly headache and fatigue. When you drop all the water you've been retaining from sugar-burning a lot of the sodium gets flushed out too. Broth helps.

The only thing that is literally a matter of gritting your teeth is carb craving. Just like quitting smoking, the only thing that makes them go away is time (or lighting up again), which you DON'T want to do, lol!

Don't feel guilty about easing off on exercise for a few days. You'll have more than enough energy soon!

Get lots of veggies too on this. If you make sure you're getting adequate salt (perhaps a cup or two of bouillion) and enough fat, you likely won't get the "carb flu" as they call it.

Your greens (and eat lots of them) will help keep you from getting constipated as well as making sure you have plenty of good fat in the diet. Macadamia nuts are a good snack...

    Good luck with it!!
