I am SO excited! (if you don't fancy reading this whole entry just jump down to the end for the reason why!)
the long version:
I started this journey just barely less then 2 years ago. 2 years ago I started running twice a week... and by running I mean running for 10 seconds then walking for 5 minutes... I did my first timed 5k a few weeks in and it took me just over an hour.... But I refused to be discouraged and kept on going!
fast forward two years..
today I was feeling particularly discouraged. my weight hasn't budged yet much this year. i've only lost 35 pounds this year compared to 80 pounds last year. it's been slow going and hard work! some days I just want to give up. but I have been doing some long runs on Sunday's anyways, working towards a half marathon distance (up to 15k so far!) it's been hard work but great to have a new challenge to focus on instead of my weight. well today I didn't have my usual 90 minutes to go to the gym so I knew I was going to have to do something fast and hard so I decided to go for a run outside (most of my training has been on a treadmill) I thought I would go for a 5k run as I had about 40 minutes and in my half marathon runs that's about how long a 5k takes me (I do longer runs at an easy pace, and on a 3% incline) so I set out to run and noticed my speed was SO SLOW!! I couldn't believe I was running at a 6 km/hour pace... that's hardly a walk on the treadmill.... finally I realized that was my pace, not my speed! now I haven't run without a 3% incline in at least 6 months so I decided to crank it up and see how fast I could do a 5k.... turns out pretty fast! I finally ran sub 30 min! 29:20 to be exact! SO EXCITING! I can't believe how far I have come! half my 5k time in two years is TOTALLY worth the blood, sweat and tears. totally worth the loose skin, the careful eating and the endless frustration with the scales!!!

The short version:
February 2012 5k time: 61 min
February 2014 5k time: 29:20 min
