Eating Pattern

Tuesday, February 04, 2014

I am reading the book Mindless Eating by Brian Wansink. A couple of nights ago I read the question, "Do you save the best for last?" They set up studies to find out the answers. For this issue they learned that birth order made a difference. The researchers discovered that people who ate the best one first either grew up as a youngest child or came from a large family. The people who would save the best for last were the oldest children or only children. There is much more detail in the book, and I would recommend reading this book since it very interesting but be warned sometimes in reading you may end up eating!
I am grew up the youngest so I can start with the best first such as eating a dessert before a meal. I think I also have this tendency too because I bottom out and I need that quick pick me up.
Another eating behavior I noticed is that I consume ~ eat very quickly. I am not sure this is a childhood behavior as much as I see it as being learned because of the role of being a mom. When the children were born, I would eat quickly to tend to their needs. My children are now all adult yet the behavior continues.
My daughter Lisa had a jaw problem and eats very slowly. (She is currently in an internship for being a dietician.) When she eats with us, I try not finish my food until she completes her meal. Lisa taught me the little trick of setting my fork down between bites. A simple gesture yet it makes a big difference.
Mondays are my meditation day where I begin to learn a new Bible verse. I am trying to carry that over to my other lunch meals. It helps me to slow down. My goal is to eat and enjoy/taste the food I'm eating. Too often I just consume and move on to the next task.
I have not mastered this goal. I will probably always have the tendency to 'eat and run'. I had made progress. One example is I drink one green tea a day. In the past I could consume the 16.9 bottle within 15 min. now, it may take all day or at least 1/2 of the day. I have my bottle of water to sip in between and I find that it helps me to slow down.
