little discouraged

Sunday, February 02, 2014

so i weighed myself today after a week of serious diet changes and gym activities and i'm only down 2lbs. Doesn't seem real with how much I weigh and what I need to lose. I am going to keep going but try something different this week. Last week I was having protein shakes for 2 meals and 2 snacks and one big meal. When i lost weight before I had actually had a healthy 3 meals a day and 2 snacks. I wonder if the protein shakes are working against me. Any advice or input would be helpful. I don't want to get off track already.

2 ;bs is perfectly normal, and what you should be expecting! 1-2 pounds per week is normal. Some weeks you'll gain, some you'll lose, some you won't change at all! Shows like the biggest loser have given us unrealistic expectations about what we can expect your weight loss to look like. You have a great start here... don't be discouraged by success!

2 lbs is a fantastic start. While I agree that you should concentrate on whole foods, I also drink protein shakes. I usually have one before my morning workout to get fuel for the workout, it's easy to grab and easy to digest- both of which I need at 4:30 a.m. I generally have a small breakfast after my workout. I don't think you should use the shakes as meal replacements. Part of the process is learning how to manage your food intake and remain within your alloted calorie range.

You will probably see a steady loss for a few weeks/months if you keep going but the longer you go, the more likely it is that you will see some slowdown or a few plateaus.

    Good luck

    1) 2lbs is a great loss for one week ! The recommended range is 1 - 2 lbs/week. You don't want to lose too fast and have to deal with health issues, like a messed-up metabolism or excessive loose skin.

    2) If you make too many drastic changes at once, you may actually push your body into starvation mode, which makes it store food instead of releasing weight. And you run the risk of creating a "deprivation" mentality which makes a lot of people rebound. Make small, slow changes to give your mind AND your metabolism time to adapt.

    3) As many of the others have said, I'd recommend eating real food over protein shakes.

    4) Remember that you didn't put on all the weight at once, so it won't all come off at once. Some weeks you'll lose weight, some weeks you might gain and some weeks you might plateau. Your body is just trying to adapt to your new lifestyle. Keep making good choices, and make small sustainable changes that you can live with for the rest of your life.

    5) Remember the other contributors to weight loss: try to drink enough water, be sure to get a good amount of sleep, try to eliminate stress and exercise regularly. Also watch your salt intake and remember that your weight may fluctuate around that TOM.

And finally, be kind to yourself. You are doing GREAT. With time you will learn what works best for you. Keep pushing !

real food would be my choice always. From scratch. No cheese, no dairy. ETL is a wonderful and healthier program than most.

Protein shakes are not food. Your body doesn't know what it is and can't process it.

I think we forget that our bodies are made up mostly of water and that can fluctuate on
a daily basis and that we often retain water you will probably find you have dropped more weight next time you hop on the scale...Actually 2lbs is a safe amount to lose in a week, be sure that you are eating enough ,because too little slows down your metabolism and that slows down weight loss...
    Keep up the good work...

Two pounds is a great loss! Give yourself credit for the achievement! I don't know a lot about protein shakes so maybe someone else can help there but eating too little can slow down you loss due to your body thinking it is starving (not a reality but the body is a little weird that way).
Hang in there and I know you will succeed!
