It breaks my heart! Why?????????? UPDATED

Wednesday, January 29, 2014

When I found you I was never happier, you comforted me when I needed comfort, supported my healthy lifestyle and gave me hope for the future. Most of all you tasted amazing!! So please tell me why??? Why have they discontinued my Lay's Light Fat Free chips??? This is serious business, I just emailed Lay's to ask them. To be continued....

Just got got this email:

Hi Julie,

Thanks for writing. I'm sorry to confirm that Lay's Light and Ruffles Light potato chips have been discontinued. Your feedback is appreciated and will be shared with our product development team.

There are many reasons why a product may be discontinued. Sometimes stores stop carrying slower-selling items to make room for other products. When this happens at too many stores, it's difficult to continue making and selling the product.

Julie, you might enjoy Ruffles Reduced Fat, Lay's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Original, Lay's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Parmesan and Sun Dried Tomato or Lay's Kettle Cooked Reduced Fat Applewood Smoked BBQ Potato Chips. The three Kettle Cooked varieties have 40% less fat than regular potato chips. I'm sending a coupon to you in case you'd like to give one of these snacks a try.

Thanks again for sharing your comments with us. We hope you will continue to enjoy Frito-Lay products.

Best regards,

Frito-Lay Consumer Relations

They were discontinued due to a class action law suit because of the risk of dangerous side effects of the fat substitute Olestra which was removed form the label when it was "re-branded" from "Lay's WOW!" chips to "Lay's Light"
I also loved these chips and never suffered any side effect that I know of but some people are more sensitive to this additive Olestra. I personally am very sensitive to any artificial sweeteners- they give me terrible stomach cramps. But everyone is different. I think the issue wasn't so much that they were using Olestra but that they removed it from the label, purposefully trying to hide this food additive from the consumer.

I'm sorry you're going to miss them! IMHO, though, fat-free is totally useless. The fat is replaced either by something scary (olestra, which leaches vitamins) or something starchy/sugary which just turns to fat in your body anyway, with the "added benefit" of making you crave more sugar. Sorry to rant. I know it is nice to have something snacky with fewer calories. Just sayin' maybe it's not the worst thing to have to find an alternative emoticon

It just seems people don't want the healthy choices. I was pleased today to see the new Walmart that just opened has a full selection of the lower salt soup. I just hope they continue to carry them.
