Make me feel important!

Saturday, January 25, 2014

The other week I interwiew two women who had a company that had increased their results with 20 proecnt by working with education and coaching among the coworkers. One of the tools was that they had started a readingcircle (voluntary) reading books about how to sell. Very much american style that does not really go with us melancholic swedes but still rather fun.

So I asked if I could join and they said sure... I got my book yesterdaty and have to read up the first five chapters... it is not american, it is by a swedish author but he has been trained in USA so he is sort of "giddy-up" type.

This morning I read this quote:

"Pretend that every single person you meet has a sign around his or her neck that says "Make me feel important!" – Not only will you succeed in your sales, you will succeed in life."(Mary Kay Ash)

This speek directly to my "Santa-Clausdefect" - I just love to make people feel okay...

I am still panicking a lot about my 40 % procent less work – that I plan to try to fill with lectures and other interesting things that will give som money. But I do have to sell it and I am not very good in selling myself, Correction – have not been good at it so far, this is about to change emoticon

I have started by trying to sell tickets to the little show our trainee at the theatre has produced,. It is her exam work at school (her school is in fact in Finland) and she has written the play and will do the head part together with a horse... there are six permormances to be done, strating 15th of february and the last is in the beginning of march... it will be rather cold in the arena but the show is only 30 minutes. The cost is not exmpensive 50-90 crowns (7-14 USD)

My goal is to have enough seats covered that will give the impression that its sold out - that means at least 40 people each performance (we have allowance for 60) which means alltogheter 240 tickets... so far I have picked out all friends on facebook that I think can have any interest/possibility to go and sent them an invitation. Upcoming week I will follow that up by personal messages to everyone that has not made a clear "no" respondance... and if I still don´t get a "not interested message then I will try to max them fix a date and then sell them a ticket... I will also give some out as free to people I think the theatre will benefit from... I learned from that stand-up comedian I drove to Stockholm that it is important to give the audience a feeling of success, they should feel that they are having a successful experience, I have suddenly understood that it does not help how good the performanc e is - if there are very few in the audience, there will be a small feeling that "Maybe this is not so good after all, since nobody else is here".

I feel very inspired with trying to sell this, it is a very well clean-cut acitivty, it is easy to communicate what, when and who is perfroming, it is not expensive, there are mulitple target groups - theatre people, horsepeople, dopeople, feminists... and I have many of those in my netwrok.

I have sent 108 invitations and will be able to track how many of those that will actually come... ten procent is realistic and most of those will not come alone so I think there might be at least 30 tickets placed there... the others will probably place at least a hundred together... whick makes 140... only a hundred more to go!

The meeting with that book cirle is upcoming friday - I wiull use my newly learned skill there, at least three of them have childrens in the right age of being interested so I will aim for six sold tickets at that meeting....

That Mary Kay Ash quote is right out of Dale Carnegie. Have you ever read his "How To Win Friends and Influence People"? That was the first how to sales book that became an empire, and for decades was the most sold book after the Bible. He wrote the book primarily for salespeople, but it became a phenomenon for anyone who has to deal with other people.

I love that approach...seeing everyone as someone who needs to be made to feel important. No walls, no competing, no apathy...

Best wishes with the theatre project! Sounds interesting!

I have had the pleasure of hearing Mary Kay Ash speak. She was a charming but very strong go getter woman. Well worthy of admiration. Meddy you DO make people feel important. Sending big bubbles of success your way.

Your networking skills seem to be up to par for selling the tickets. I'm glad your getting exposure to the American way. emoticon In fact, some of that is all about selling people anything, by making them think they need it.

You are on the right track there, I used to work in a jewelery store before I retired
and selling is what that was all about, you need to make contact, and imress on people that they are the ones that matters right then and there.I have made a few friends that way.
The books that helped me was some written by Zig Ziglar.

Good luck with the ticket sales.

MeddyPeddy - it sounds like you have a great plan in place for the upcoming theater performance. For your individual plan - have you thought of Twitter? Twitter is a great tool to market yourself in front of people you don't know. Idenify your personal brand - who you are - what you are trying to market - and start Tweeting about it. This is a great way to reach a wider audience.

MP - you are so inspiring! It's a good plan and I've noticed that once you get an idea - and you get so many! - you always give it a go. More often than not you make work out successfully. I really admire that and know I should do more than I do in life. I thank you for 'giddy-ing me up' and I wish you well in this new venture.

Oh yes - and I also send you belated good wishes for a generally happy and successful time in 2014. emoticon
