Getting Back Into The Routine

I've been going to the gym a couple times a week and skating other nights with a friend at the local outdoor skating rinks and ponds so I feel like I'm doing pretty well on the exercise front. I have been increasing my gym workouts and am now using the eliptical, bike, and rowing machine for 15-30 minutes each at each visit. I'd like to step up my game and hit the weights in the next couple of weeks. I'll probably start with the machines targeted at leg strength since that is what I'm most comfortable with but I'll make my way to the arms, back, and shoulders. I think my favorite exercise is the rowing machine. It burns a ton of calories, focuses on my core strength, and does a little work on my arms and legs. I find my biggest issue with working out is that I get bored with the activity before I'm tired out. It's difficult to stay on a machine after I've lost interest but fortunately there are lots of options at my gym so I can always move on to something else. I'm going to start bringing a book for the bike so I can go for quite a while without becoming bored. I work up a sweat but I still don't feel like I'm burning my muscles as much as I want to.

Skating has been a ton of fun. I hadn't skated in years but it seems to be coming back to me quite nicely. I certainly don't have the speed of my youth but at least I can keep up with my friends and it gets us all out of the house regularly. Plus, one of my girlfriends and I have been meaning to spend more time together so this has been a perfect way to connect. I'm really happy that we're both enjoying it. Some days it's too cold here though so we can't go, but we're out of the horrible cold snap we were in (-45 some days) and it seems to be warming up a bit.

My raw eating is doing well. This weekend was a bit hit and miss since we had a number of activities outside of the house which included meals but that's okay. I'm not going for 100% raw yet anyway since it's so cold here and that's not practical at these temps. It was a fun weekend though so it was worth it to slip a bit. Friday my partner had a sponge hockey game and I went along to skate on one of the spare rinks with a couple friends. We all went to my partner's team's sponsor bar after and stayed late to drink and sing karaoke. I took the role of DD though since I'm trying to avoid alcohol. Even sober I had a fantastic time and even got up to sing once. After dropping everyone off it was time for bed though. The next day we had a dinner, aquarium fish talk, and fish auction to attend. We're part of an aquarium group in our city that gets together to listen to experts in the fish field speak about their particular expertise in the hobby. This last talk was given by Rusty Wessel who focuses on South/Central American Cichlids and Livebearers. He gave a great talk about conservation and how humans have affected the areas that he brings fish from. He really encourages people in the hobby to do their part and breed the endangered fish species so that they can be put back in their habitats as they are restored. I actually won a bid on a quartet of Herichthys Labridens, a Central American Cichlid, that is on the red list of endangered fish because they've been hybridized with an invading species. Mine are some of the few pure fish in the hobby and I feel a lot of pressure to make sure they succeed and thrive but it's worth it. To see this beautiful fish restored would be amazing.

Anyway, that was quite a babble. I'm debating going to the gym tomorrow. I'd like to get out skating again, but the temps are supposed to be -29 so I'm thinking gym would be my best bet. Guess I'll see when I wake up. Can't wait until spring!
