HIIT is no joke!

Friday, January 17, 2014

Yesterday turned out to be a good day. I made it to bed without eating, AND I slept through the night. I couldn't believe it when I woke up and realized it was time to get up and I hadn't gotten up and eaten before. I was surprised and STOKED. Excellent way to start the morning!

I got up and had egg whites, whole wheat toast and a banana to get me going. After I ate, I read messages here on SP and futzed around for a few minutes before heading out to the gym. Then it was time to go and kick my own butt. And I did.

First I started with walking, as usual. I walked for 10 minutes. Then I got on the recumbent bike. I decided I was gonna try HIIT on the recumbent bike and see how it went. I did 20 seconds super fast, 40 seconds recovery. I did it for 10 minutes. And WOW was it a stellar workout! My heart rate stayed up and I felt like an exercise beast at the end. So two thumbs up to that! I had been wanting to try HIIT but I don't think I'm ready to try jogging or running yet, so the recumbent bike was the perfect way to do it.

Then it was time for strength training. I did 24 minutes today, hitting almost all the machines. The last machine I did was the leg press, and it took all I had in me to push it up that last time. So I guess I'm doing it right. I was absolutely exhausted when I was finished with my 54 minutes total of working out. But the sense of accomplishment, wow!

Then I came home and recovered for a while. Drank lots of water and rested for a few minutes. Then I woke dh up so we could go get a new microwave. Ours died last night and I cannot abide a house without a microwave. So we braved the snow and crappy weather and headed to Walmart to get one. Between that and a few other things we needed, we walked out $130 lighter, but it's all good because now I have a functional microwave!

The lack of microwave interfered with my lunch plans. As in... I can't cook without a microwave. I mean, I CAN, I know I could have cooked the instant rice and steamed the veggies on the stove... but meh. I've been doing really well with cooking at home for the most part, but I drew the line at doing it without a microwave. So we had Greek, but I had healthy Greek. A chicken feta sub, no sauce, and a cup of chicken soup. It was really good, really filling and not high in calories. So I figure that's a pretty big win.

Dinner was a veggie burger and pickles and a salad. It was not satisfying. I don't know what I'm in the mood for, but that wasn't it. I ate it, though, and I wasn't hungry anymore when I was finished, so I guess that's the important part. I haven't had my nighttime snack yet. I've been messing with my new iPod and lost track of time... otherwise known as being occupied long enough that food wasn't the only thing on my mind and I wasn't counting the seconds til snack time. But I'm about to have it now. I'm gonna have blackberries with cottage cheese and whole grain toast.

So... tomorrow is the day! My first swimming lesson! I'm really excited, but nervous. I don't know what to expect. I don't know how crowded the community center is on the weekends, I don't know what sorts of people will be in my class, and I don't know what my instructor will be like. A lot of unknowns for me, and I don't like unknowns. But I am excited. I have my gym bag all packed and waiting for me. All I gotta do is get up and eat, and then get dressed and head over there. Fingers crossed that it goes well!

And now I'm gonna catch up on some blogs. Hope everyone is enjoying their Friday evening!

Hey I miss this blog1! So glad you had such an excellent workout! Good job trying HITT. I do the same three times a week at our community gym on a recumbent bike too. My knees are too old and weak to do it on a different piece of equipment. The bike also helps to make my knees feel stronger! Hey I remember last month your calendar had just a few stars. I bet you beat last month just in this week!

I took swimming lessons for the first time when I was 28. It was an adult class, and I was the youngest by a few decades. Our instructor was fantastic and we had a blast! I bet you'll have a ton of fun in your swim lessons too!

I just spent a blissful hour in an empty hotel pool, and I wonder how I can do this all the time-- it is SO good for the soul!

Another just awesome day for you!! You just keep making more proud than ever of you that you are out there and getting it done. Kicking butt!!! I did not do much after coming home from that disaster that was the Y tour. But I am excited to get a tour of this other fitness center. Former walking buddy is up for it too but don't think she will join. SHe barely stirs out her hamlet unless I force her to go somewhere and pick her up. Anything more than a mile from her house is too far for her to drive for anything but work. I read reviews of it online and someone was complaining it was full of older people. Ok by me since I fit that category so I am ready to go. I just hope it is not too expensive since right now we are helping younger daughter pay her rent until her job becomes full time which they promised her it would evolve to full time eventually.

Keep doing the great job you are doing!! Don't be afraid for tomorrow. You will do great!!!! Can't wait to hear all about it!!!

have another peaceful night's emoticon I am off soon as I have to get up early to drive 2 hours to NJ and then start moving furniture. I think I will be getting lots of exercise tomorrow. Our son is coming with us to help and older daughter and her husband are coming too. Will be like old home week. Just hope it doesn't snow too much tomorrow. Only snow showers are predicted and hopefully that will be all it is!!
