So I'm trying to set my sights on a few races this year. Having at least one per month last year really helped keep me on track with my activity goals.
Races I enjoyed last year and why:
Zombie Run - I'm a HUGE fan of zombie movies, and I really love the Zombies, Run! app for my phone. Having "zombies" placed throughout the race was lots of fun and gave me incentive to really put on the speed to evade them. And I was really proud of having "survived" last year.
Biggest Loser Off-Road Challenge/Spartan Sprint - Halfway through this race, I burst in to tears and vowed I would never, EVER attempt anything like it again. But once I finished, I reflected on what an amazing experience it was... the community of strangers that was formed, the support from everyone, the pride in my accomplishments... and suddenly I realized that I REALLY wanted to do it again! Except maybe this time with better training! LOL
Firefly Run/Rave Run - I liked the concept of these night runs and enjoyed Firefly Run far more than Rave Run, for a couple of reasons. (1) Rave Run was hideously organized - poor course management led to dangerous areas of the course and a terrible bottleneck at the end. (2) Rave Run was still early enough in the year (April) that it was absolutely FREEZING by the time it got started. (3) Rave Run wasn't actually a 5K as advertised. The course was only a little over 2 miles. Rave Run did have awesome shirts though... I'd participate in a night run again as long as it was sometime in the summer and seemed to have better management.
The only races that I DID NOT enjoy last year were Color Me Rad & The Color Run. I am not a fan of the powder used for the color. I was washing color out of my hair for AT LEAST a week and had stains on my skin from the color as well. I also just didn't enjoy the vibe from the crowd at these races either. I dunno, I just don't think it was my scene.
There are a few things that I'd still like to try:
Fight for Air Climb - This is a climb up the stairs of a downtown skyscraper. I'm not sure how many stories or steps it is, but it seems like an awesome challenge. The only thing that has been off-putting about signing up for this is the requirement that all participants raise $100 in donations IN ADDITION to your $35 registration fee. So I'm still debating...
Foam Race - Last year, I saw an ad for a "foam" run, but it ended up coinciding with the memorial hike for a friend, so I wasn't able to sign up for it. It looked like fun - mud and water and foam and such.
Trail Run - While the Off-Road Challenge was definitely not a road race, I'd probably classify it as a mud run/obstacle course. I'd be interested in trying just a trail run... no mud pits, no obstacles, nothing crazy, just a run off-road.
Long distance? - I'm still not sure whether I would want to attempt anything like a 10K or half-marathon. My sister, who is an avid runner, trained for a half-marathon and really felt like she was in over her head the whole time. I'm pretty comfortable with 5Ks, so I'm just not sure whether I want to branch out into longer things.
So now I just have to figure out what events I will be doing this year. I'm about 95% sure that I'm going to sign up for the Biggest Loser Off-Road Challenge/Spartan Sprint again. I'm wondering if I should combine my enjoyment of obstacles with my love for all things zombie and do one of the zombie mud runs. My work will likely also provide opportunities as it did last year with the Runnin' of the Green and the JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes.
If anyone hears of any neat runs going on in the Denver area, let me know!
