Winter Weather

Still a little cold here in Northeast Ohio. The kids and my wife (who's a teacher) are still off due to the temperatures. That makes an extra three days on their Christmas break. Since I work from home most of the time, it's nice having them around the house so much. I really love being with my family. That is one of the main reasons that I have chosen to create a healthier version of myself. I want to be around for a long time to spend all the time I can with them.

The challenge with the temperatures being what they are is getting in my walks. It is just too cold to head up the street. I do strength training every other day and walks on the alternating days. Last night I decided that I would try something new. I decided to give the Couch to 5 K program (C25K) a try again. Given that it was too cold to head outside I did it in the basement. We built a new house last year and our basement is pretty big and open. It wasn't like running outside. It was a little cramped, but it beat sitting on the couch not working out because of the cold weather. After the first couple of runs, I was wondering if I was going to make it through the first session, but I kept pushing through it and by the time I was done I felt great and believed I could actually go longer. I'm looking forward to continuing with the C25K program and moving it outside when the weather cooperates, but for now I'm thrilled I found that I can pull it off in our basement.

    Great goal and super use of your basement! Also there are walking DVDs where you can work up quite the sweat walking right in place in front of the tube. Leslie Sanzone is well-regarded for hers.

    I stay committed to my one & only 5K of the year coming up in May. Starting in March I'll probably get out and do my practice jogs. I don't think you could ever call what I do as a "run"...lol!

    Then is double down time for some serious cycling! Can't wait!
