Farewell, Madiba Mandela

Friday, December 06, 2013

“No one is born hating another person because of the color of his skin, or his background, or his religion. People must learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, they can be taught to love, for love comes more naturally to the human heart than its opposite.” -- Nelson Mandela

"I learned that courage was not the absence of fear, but the triumph over it. The brave man is not he who does not feel afraid, but he who conquers that fear."

His passing stopped the world in it's tracks. He has done more to create peace and love in the world than any other human being in history and that alone makes him a pretty massive icon in my book.

Thanks for sharing and recognising this important matter.

    Cheers

We are lucky to have lived in his time, and have the opportunity to see his example and follow it. He gives me hope for humankind... one man's triumph despite so much power and hate directed at him.

So wonderful to see this here.... in the whirlwind of reflection, mourning and celebration of his life here in South Africa since we learned that he has died what has struck me most in thinking about him and hearing others talk about him was his delight.... in people, children, the world, colours, life, his own jokes...Tata Madiba... So many stories here on the radio, on the streets, as people phone in to talk of their "Madiba moment" and how he touched their lives....As I was driving back yesterday one older white woman phoned in saying she lived in a rural town and had shortly after his release been in the town square when he came to speak. Her husband as Mandela left to get in to a helicopter she says ran towards him expecting the police/guards etc to stop him. Mandela stopped turned to him and gave his beautiful smile from his heart. Her husband said "It would be an honour for me to shake your hand". Mandela reached out and held his hand with both of his and said "the honour is all mine"...

If he could forgive the injustice done to him, surely we can forgive ourselves when we fail. Best wishes for a great weekend.
