If We Make it Through December...

Thursday, December 05, 2013

My husband likes to bring up the lyrics of that old country song that our Moms used to hum when times got tough. If we make it through December...Everything's gonna be alright....

This time of year, amidst all the celebrating can be hard for some of us. At a time when we are expected to be singing and spreading joy, many are feeling the effects of Seasonal Depression starting in as the days grow shorter and darker. And for many, who don't have the support of the big loving families on the Christmas cards, the season only amplifies their loneliness. And for those of us struggling with impulsive eating... The break room tables strewn with cookies and candies are a minefield of temptation..

Still I find myself, as I always have, uplifted by the season. Not the cold and snow and ice of the Vermont winter, but the MAGIC in the air. The beauty of the landscape reflecting the Christmas lights and the sound of Christmas carols being sung by young and old. Yule trees and Menorahs and big plans for the New Year; for me it is a season of hope and promise and renewal...

As this year comes to a close I find myself reflecting back on the journey I have taken so far. I have learned so much. New exercises and new foods and new Spark friends. On November 24th I finallt dropped below 200 pounds and I cried like a baby. And this Christmas ( because I have been a VERY good girl ), it appears Santa will be bringing me snowshoes ! Oh the adventure....

Thank you to EVERYONE who has visited my page or my blog and been SO supportive. If you only knew how much it has meant to me, and the difference you have made in my life. There are no words to adequately express it.... My simple and heartfelt THANK YOU will have to do.

Have a wonderful, healthy, holiday season....

Yes, this time of year makes us revisit the good, the bad and yes, even the ugly, from the year. But that's a good thing, because then we know what worked, what didn't and what was marginally successful.

Wishing you a wonderful holiday season and more success as 2014 begins.

emoticon I used to live in Juneau, so I know about the long dark days. I also have lived apart from my family for most of my life, so I relate there as well.

I once visited Vermont (in the middle of summer) and fell in love with it. If I thought I could handle real winter, I would move there in a minute.

Thanks for sharing the beauty of the season both in word and picture!

What a great blog! Congrats on the below 200 weight loss!!! I can't even fathom how awesome that must feel. I too suffer from SAD (but regular year found depression too). It makes it so much harder to get through this month. Most people think it's a great time of year & some of us just struggle to see that.

Either way, thanks for your blog posting. It really hit home w/me. I hope you have a wonderful holiday & enjoy your snowshoes!!!

    God bless,
