GMO labeling vote and Whole Foods Grocery Stores

Wednesday, November 06, 2013

It is not final (mail in ballots are still being counted) but it appears that GMO labeling failed in the Washington state vote yesterday. If you are a proponent of labeling you will be encouraged to read this article about Whole Foods Groceries saying that all foods in their stores will be GMO free or labeled in 5 years.

BTW the vote was very close and given the huge $ spent for ads by Monsanto, DuPont and the Grocery Manufactures Assoc. ($22 million to be exact) it will not be surprising if labeling is defeated. You should be aware that the GMA received millions of $ from big food companies like Coca Cola, Pepsi, and Kraft.

I am going to read Malcom Gladwell's latest book, David and Goliath as that's what I think of when it seems that big companies control so much of our democracy. Thanks for sharing this info.

Sad about BIG GREEDY CORPORATE BUCKS, but at least WF is behaving responsibly in this.

When I consider buying a normally GMO product, I check to see what their labeling says. Of course if it's organic, no problem. But, for instance with the Silk Creamer which I buy from my local Kroger's (when I can't get to WF for Organic Valley's version) the container says, "Verified by the Non-GMO Project’s product verification program."

And, BTW, the Fage Greek yogurt I enjoy occasionally which is not organic says, "FAGE Total Greek yogurt uses only raw, 100% natural whole milk and cream supplied from rBGH-free cows."

    Peace out,

Sad, but I can't say that I'm surprised. Unfortunately, big business and special interest groups have a lot of money to throw at any issue that interferes with their interests.
