This has been an interesting night and two days...feeding animals after work on Wednesday I saw something kind of odd hanging in the rafter above...some twenty to thirty feet up. Upon hearing a blood curdling cry and a bit of fluttering I decided to get my strong flashlight...just as Mom called asking me what I was doing...I was peering at two fat coils of snake wrapped around a plump bird...the snakes thin head reaching out in space in offence of the light...I told Mom everything was ok and I would be back to the house in a minute...this was four days after I disturbed but never saw a snake in the barn floor in the hay. I was raking the loose hay into stalls and outside when the odor of skunk erupted pungently from my rake head...expecting to see a skunk carcass I drew back when I remembered my brother told me water moccasins have a very bad odor....a ewe approaching also retreated...later a friend informed me that even rat snakes are smelly when breeding season comes about...I like to think this is the later.
Anyway no more close encounters and I cleaned stalls, pen and most of the barn floor the past two days...animals are well and all is right with the world.
