I went down to the woods today . . .

My wife's a Girl from the Coast. Douglas Fir grow *everywhere* on our coast, but don't do well here in the interior. For our 25th wedding anniversary, 13 years ago, I planted 5 Douglas Firs, one for each 5 years of our marriage, so my wife could look out the kitchen window and see the kind of trees she loves from her childhood. Sadly. over the years, all but one of those firs succumbed to drought, deer grazing or just plain bad gardening practices.
Flash forward to today. I went down to the woods and dug up six new Douglas Firs, ranging in height from about 3' to 6'. I bought them home to restock the 'Anniversary Forest', which now that we've been married 38 years, needs a total of 7 trees. Let me tell you, digging holes for 6 new trees in our rocky, clay-ey soil is hard work; digging up 6 fir trees is very hard work; hauling them to the truck is heavy work; planting them is exhausting work.
But man, oh man, does the Anniversary Forest look good again : ) Light was too poor for photos by the time I was done, but I'll get some shots in the next day or two and post them on a future blog. Feels good : )
