Not a great weekend

Monday, October 14, 2013

I haven't been able to reach my ex all weekend, and I'm nervous. That usually means Frank has had to go to the hospital again. He usually calls me when that happens, but with my ex you never know. I'm thinking that I'll get him tomorrow and he'll say, "Oh, we went away for the weekend. Didn't I tell you?" He HAS done that several times.

I had a lot of trouble sleeping this weekend. I've gotten night leg cramps all my life, which I know are common and not dangerous (although maddening as anything). Well, I'm getting night cramps in my right hand now, and they're every bit as painful as the leg variety. I have simply never heard of night hand cramps!

RIP to my beloved crock pot, which went to that great Appliance Store in the Sky today. I know I was extremely lucky to get more than 35 years out of it, especially as often as I use it. Well, I don't want to seem insensitive or anything, but the new one is getting ordered on Friday. Half of the ingredients in my kitchen are for crock pot recipes. It's my mainstay in the winter. I found a beauty at Kohl's on sale. It's about 1/3 bigger than the old one!

My chili didn't turn out the way I'd hoped. I way overestimated how much chili powder I'd need, and now I have the clearest sinuses in town. In fact, I probably didn't need ANY chili powder, given the chorizo in it. Boy, am I glad I didn't use the poblanos! I love hominy, but I won't use it next time. I didn't have enough canned beans so I filled it out with the hominy. Next time I'll have enough beans. I'll finish the batch, of course, but it's not as good as I'd hoped.

My next vacation is in eight weeks, when I get Christmas week off. I'm emotionally spent.

Hi Mary, I hope you've got in touch with your Ex and that everything is fine. A local Dr. here writes a newspaper article and he said to alleviate leg cramps put a bar of unwrapped soap under your bed sheet and leave it there for around 3 months and then put a new bar there. I think the only soap bar he said not to use is Dial and I'm not quite sure why. Many people have written back to him and said it works well for them so I hope you'll try it. I'm also a big fan of cooking with my crockpot and would replace it ASAP if it broke. They are worth the price as it's one kitchen tool I use often and year round. I hope you have a wonderful week. Take good care. emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon emoticon

Are your ex and your old crock pot related?

Old appliances never die, they just get put at the back of the cupboard behind the new one. Mine gets used fairly often year round. emoticon

Hoping that today is better. Too bad about the chili-it sounded like it would be good, but live and learn, I guess.

I LOVE my crockpot and, like you, use it all year long, but especially in the Fall and Winter! Glad to hear you're replacing yours with a bigger version.

Sorry about the cramps (I've never heard of the hand cramps either). I know how painful the leg cramps are, so hopefully the cramps won't become a nightly thing.

    Wishing you better sleep tonight.

Ah, your leg/foot cramp story is mine! And just had my right hand cramp up this Summer, for the first time.
But after years of frequent leg/foot cramps..I have greatly reduced the number to about 5 a year...pretty sure it is the vitamin/mineral pack (CVS's Diabetes Health Pack) has Magnesium and other minerals. So, I am going to keep taking them. Also drinking enough water.

I am lost without my CrockPot! Especially in Winter. Hope you love your new one!

I had to replace ours about 3 years ago...(our 30+ yr. old one was Potnapped by our daughter!) but, I love the nice big oval one we replaced it with! Holds more, lift out Crock, easier to clean. emoticon

Hope you enjoy picking out your new crock pot....
I'm a pressure cooker gal myself.
I don't have the patience for crock pots and I'm afraid of leaving anything on when I leave the house.

    I enjoyed reading your blog.

As for the night time hand cramps - how about having a heating pad right ready to wrap it in when that happens?

I, too, have dealt with leg cramps since my teen years - not until I was married was I aware that getting up & walking helps by stretching the muscles (wonderful knowledge that my beloved MrV shared with me). Over the past ten or so years, I have experienced the hand cramps, also. Boy! They sure can be painful, can't they? To add to the mix --- over the past few years, my feet cramp up, also. I choose to just praise & thank the good Lord that they aren't worse than they are & that they aren't a daily or nightly occurrence.

It is always with a bit of sadness felt when a reliable "old friend" appliance "bites the dust". I hope you enjoy your new crock pot for many years to come.

This summer our youngest & her precious husband gifted us with a NInja - it is a combination of crock pot & stove top cooker, plus, one can bake in it. It actually holds over twice as much as our crock pots. I have been delighted with the results we have gotten when using it. Still, I have continued to use my favorite "trusted & true" crock pot for soups.

    God bless!

I get foot cramps, sometimes while driving. Weird! I'm amazed that your ex calls you about anything. I only hear about my ex from my kids.

Texan solution to overspiced chili is to add a slurry of water and fine cornmeal (or nixtamalized cornmeal like Maseca if you have it, but it doesn't make enough difference to be worth buying a bag.) If it tastes watered-down despite the cornmeal, add just a little brown sugar-- maybe a quarter teaspoon per cup of chili-- and a splash of something acidic like lemon juice or cider vinegar.

I hope that all is well with your son.

WOW! That is one amazing crockpot you had. I'm like you and love using my crockpot all the time especially when it gets cold outside.

Good on you for getting 35 years out of your crock pot. Good for being able to get a new one from Kohl's. I'm going to be using my Crock a fair amount this week because I like to have crock pot meals. emoticon emoticon

I get terrible leg cramps sometimes. I was told to take magnesium (sp) and I have been taking it ever since and I only get cramps now when I don't take magnesium. Maybe give it a try, can't hurt and it may help.
