Random Friday Thoughts and Music

Friday, October 11, 2013

I ran four miles on Wednesday. I ran it all, first time I've run an entire run. I decided to take it slow the whole way, to see if I could and I did. Except to let one car go. What a feeling!

I found an old playlist from the early days of attempting to run. Let me first say I am not a fan of Miley Cyrus but I heard this song about three years ago in a gym where I used to work, not knowing who she was.

At that time I was struggling to run for one song, walk for another on the treadmill. That morning, I forgot my ipod. I needed my music so I almost went home! But I told myself just do a brisk walk instead. So this song starts playing in the gym and it gave me a little boost to run a bit. I had no idea who she was but the song inspired me so I downloaded it later that day.

When I decided to attempt to run the full four miles Tuesday, I pulled out the old playlist with The Climb. It inspired me again just like it did three years ago. Excellent lyrics to think about when you are trying to achieve any goal:

Speaking of running, why do people run in the street when there is a perfectly good sidewalk available? At least two days a week when I drive to work in the dark, I weave through a twisty residential street and as I come around a curve, there are runners coming at me in the street, no reflective gear. Just curious why they wouldn't run on the perfectly good sidewalk right there.

Now it's time to decide my weekend goals to make the Monday version of myself proud of the weekend version of myself.

1. Meditate - haven't gotten around this October goal yet.
2. Strength training - I've gotten back into the SP Boot Camp Total Body Workout. Makes me sore for days.... and stronger for it.
3. Green smoothies - getting my five a day is hard on the weekends. Green smoothies are a great way to fit that in.

So sparkfriends, let's lock arms dance and take on the weekend because "we go together like rama lama lama ka dinga da dinga dong"....

People run in the street because there is more "give/bounce" in asphalt than in concrete. Concrete is very hard on the body and joints. Congrats with your excellent run.

Hurray for you! I walk in the street because there are no sidewalks... but we are closer to getting them, at least out by the main road!

Yay! You are awesome! I can't wait to be able to run that far without a walk break!

I always wonder that about the runners in the street, too! Our neighborhood has excellent sidewalks!

That is great that you can run 4 miles! What a great feeling.
As far as running in the streets, I must admit that sometimes I choose the street rather than the sidewalk because some of the sidewalks are terrible. They are not flat(due to tree roots), or they have tons of bark, twigs, and other objects (especially after a storm). I live in an old town so some of the sidewalks are a bit old and not in top shape.
Sometimes it is more dangerous on the sidewalks than in the streets. However, if the sidewalk is somewhat decent, I still choose the sidewalk over the street (bent my ankles a couple of times though).
    Have a nice weekend!

Running four miles straight shows how far you've come from when you were struggling to run one song walk one song on the treadmill! Awesome!

I'm not a runner so I wouldn't know why runners use the street instead of the sidewalk. One day hubby and I were talking about this (it's the same in our neighborhood) he said there might be more give in the blacktop than in the sidewalk cement. I thought that since you are a runner you would know! Is it the factor of low tree branches over sidewalks you can run into occasionally? Too many cracks to trip over?

I'm glad you mentioned that it's time to gear up for the weekend! I thought it was Thursday! Now I'm pumped...the weekend is here! Have a great weekend Kellie!

I'm with you. I want to be proud of myself on Monday too.
As for those final lyrics, now I'm headed outside with the soundtrack of Grease running in my head. I like that.
