This afternoon I was leafing through one of my journals from over 10 years ago. I was struggling with my weight back then, too, and had included the following essay about attitude. It a struck a chord with me today (as it must have, all those years ago). It's short and I'd like to share it with all of you now:
Control Your Attitude
by Melody Jo Hamor
At Losing It Online [I looked and this website is no longer active, or I'd have shared a link] we are always talking about being positive. Staying positive. Thinking positive. But it's hard to do when you've got unkind, destructive people around you, isn't it?
Well, I want to talk to you about control. The kind of control that we have over ourselves. We each have complete control over our lives. We have free will to make choices as we see fit. Our choices are certainly swayed strongly sometimes by certain things and certain people, but overall, we have the ability to decide what happens or doesn't happen in our lives, no matter what someone's opinion is. That's control. That's power. You have it and I have it.
You're in the driver's seat of your life. You decide where you're going to go. That's a very powerful thing to realize. Once you know and feel that control, you can overcome so many obstacles in your life. Number one on the list, is your attitude. Only you can make you feel bad. Only you can make you feel sad. Only you can allow yourself to think negative. An amazing lady once said, "No one can make you feel inferior without your permission." Eleanor Roosevelt was right.
It's true. You don't have to allow unkind people to control your attitude. Don't let them have that kind of power over you. The power is yours. Take the reins and decide that you're not going to let anyone hurt you, or make you feel inferior. You have the strength inside you to do it. Take control of your attitude, and the rest will follow.
I believe in you and I know you can succeed! Try your best, everyday, to improve upon yesterday, and you'll reach your goals.
With that in mind, I'm adopting a positive attitude for the week ahead, completely confident that I will face and overcome any obstacles or challenges that come my way. I KNOW that I will stay on track and do the things that will bring me closer to winning my Healthy Weight Challenge.
I hope you all do the same.
