Looking for winter boots.

Sunday, October 06, 2013

I live in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. We usually get a LOT of snow here in the winter.

I came here from the more temperate climate of the Vancouver area of BC. There was little snow there, and the few times it did, it would often be gone in a couple of days or a week at the most....... I didn't have much need for boots that could deal with knee high snow and minus 40 degree weather......

But when I moved here 7 years ago, I went looking for boots and after a long and hard search, I finally found some that almost fit. They had a lining that had to be put on first, then squeeze my foot into the outer shell. Not the best fit, but at least I could wear them...... and they kept my feet warm and dry.

This past winter I could not wear them, and for most of the spring and summer, I could not wear any shoes at all.

I was having a side effect to one of the medications I take daily. They caused my feet and legs (from the ankle to the knees) to swell up. I could hardly walk. I spent most of the summer going to the doctor and him adjusting my meds until finally they are now down to a somewhat normal size. (almost but not quite!)

So last winter I never wore boots and had to be very careful anywhere I went. I did have one oversized pair of runners that I could get on, even if I couldn't do them up, so that had to do me......

This winter I am trying to find some new boots that fit. But I have a problem. I have very high arches and very wide feet. I have been to several places, but have not found anywhere that stocks hard to fit sizes. I guess there is not enough market for them here.....

So I googled winter boots for high arches but all the sites were talking about high insteps which they called high arches. The instep in under the foot but the arch is on top of the foot -- at least that is what I have gone by my entire life and my mother and most of my sisters have the same foot problem and call it the same way I do.....

I need boots that open up, (not slip on) where I can somehow adjust the fastening. The opening has to begin very low, close to the toes so that I can get my feet into them.

And then there is the width problem. I had my feet measured once when I was much younger, and was told that I should take a Double E width, but there are very few places that even make them that wide. So I have always had to buy extra long footwear just to get that little bit of extra width, and that means I always have empty toe space that I continually trip over..... My feet have not narrowed over the years, so width continues to be a problem.

On Monday I will get on the phone and see if any place listed in the phone book carries them. I cannot go traipsing all over town looking for something that I may not be able to find anyway...... That has just not worked so far. It is a big city and I have to travel by bus.....

Tonight I looked on line, and did find one place that does carry wide fitting shoes so I will be checking them out more closely on Monday as well. It is scary dealing with some company you don't know, can't see, have no store to walk into..... and don't even know which country, state or province they are located.

Hopefully something will come up before the snow sticks to the ground!

Linda, what about galoshes? Don't know what they may be called in Canada, but the type of boot that goes over a pair of shoes.... You may be able to find a pair that will simply fit over your feet. I always assumed the instep was the arch as well, so don't know what to tell ya! Maybe search for boots that go over shoes? Good luck!

I have wide calves and also need a wide with boot. there are a few places I know of in the states which might ship to canada. google hard to find boot sizes. that will give you a lot of places with up to a 5x wide calf width and lots of variations in the shoe sizes. and good thing with most of these is they have zippers

    Good Interesting blog Linda.
I can identify with you as I have a high instep and wide feet same fitting as you. We are lucky here as there are a few shops here and there that sell something suitable. I hope you find something nice and comfortable to wear.
