Happiness from Helping

Thursday, October 03, 2013

Lately I have been putting extra effort into helping others. It doesn't take very much time or money to help others and brighten another persons day.

I am starting a project to help pregnant teenagers. It wont actually do anything to HELP them, but it will let them know that someone cares. I am making cute baby hats to donate to a local home for pregnant teens. I am going to put an encouraging note in each of the hats to let the teens know that they don't need to worry about every little thing, they just need love. Everything that is important as a parent comes from love. Hopefully this will make at least one person happy!

The neat thing is that I posted my idea on a local free items page asking if anyone had yarn that they weren't using and I have had quite a few responses! I am actually getting to start this project without putting any money into it! This is a time consuming task, but I have been looking for something to keep my hands busy so that I am less likely to snack for no reason!

I am really looking for ways to help other people. I think I will buy some umbrellas at the dollar store to hand to people on rainy days if they don't have one!

If someone is struggling, now I get excited because I have an opportunity to help! I like to see how many people I can help in one day. If everyone would just help even one person a week, this world would be a brighter place for everyone!

The news near me did a story about a knitting group who meets at the hospital once a week and makes unique baby hats. Many are grandmothers or stay-at-home moms who enjoy the company and knitting. The mothers who get the hats are allowed to choose which they want (so many designs!) and many are very grateful for such a sweet gift. (Plus in MN it's always a good thing to have an extra baby hat in the winter!)

If you watch NCIS, Pauley Perette, who plays Abby, always keeps socks in her car to give to homeless people she sees on the road. When your feet are in a new pair of warm socks it helps you feel better, so just handing out a pair of socks to a homeless person can mean a lot. A few dollars for some socks isn't much to some people, but to other's it is a wonderful gift. Perhaps that's something you could consider; or if you don't see a lot of homeless people consider donating some to a homeless shelter.

There are so many small ways to give. I can tell you that with all my troubles, when someone holds a door for me or lets me in front of them in the line because they have a lot of items and I have only a few, it means more than people realize. I can't do much for others right now, but I'll put a smile on my face no matter how I'm feeling, and smile at every person who stares at the young disabled woman - hopefully it helps brighten their day a little. Smiles are free, relatively easy, and can be spread far and wide in no time at all.
