10 months post baby, I set a new half marathon PR!

Tuesday, October 01, 2013

On Sunday I ran my second half marathon, just like my first back in 2011, I ran the Rock ‘N’ Roll Providence!

Since having the baby 10 months ago, life has been hectic and I wasn’t too confident in my ability to beat my first half marathon time of 2:18:42.

A lesson my friends, never doubt yourself.

I did it.

10 months post-partum, I beat my previous half marathon PR with a time of 2:18:18.

It may only be a difference of 24 seconds, but a lot has changed in the last 2 years and I am so proud and (a little surprised) that I was able to set a new personal record!

Here are my 2011 results:

As you can see, I actually beat my time at all of the race markers throughout the entire 13.1 miles this year compared to 2011!

The race started a little after 7am on a foggy 60* morning. The first few miles flew by at a 9:40 pace. I knew I was going too fast to be able to maintain my strength for the entire 13.1 miles, but I let my body do its thing.

Mile 4 came with the course’s largest hill, and my pace dropped back to 10:30 min/mile.

From there on out I averaged 10:21 for the rest of the race (my Garmin actually said the course was 13.4 miles!). As someone who traditionally averages closer to 11 min/mile during training runs longer than 4-5 miles, I felt like I was flying (I am also used to pushing Baby S in the jogging stroller, so not having to push 30 extra pounds may have helped increase my speed!).

Truthfully, I had never run at that pace for that long before in my life.

Come mile 8-10 my legs started to tighten, and I began to hit the “wall”…. but I pushed through and didn’t allow my pace to slow too much.

At the water stops, I took advantage of the quick break and walked a few steps while I drank the water and Gatorade which seemed to be the quick 5 second break my legs needed every couple of miles. I even enjoyed a package of Swedish Fish (my long run fuel of choice) throughout the race which gave my system the jolt of energy it needed to push through!

The hardest mile for me was the last, but knowing my family would be there at the end to support me got me to the finish line!

The moment I finished, I knew I set a new PR.

10 months post-partum, I did it.

I actually found a friend from high school at the start of the race, and by shear coincidence we run at exactly the same pace. She helped to push me through the entire 13.1 miles. I really do not think I could have set a new PR without her there pushing me to the end. I owe her a lot for her support. Although unintentional, it was exactly what I needed to run a strong race!

I’m not sure when or if there will be another long distance race in my future. But for now I am going to revel in my success of this past weekend.

Never doubt your abilities. You never know what your body is capable of.

You might surprise yourself.
