Blustery day

Saturday, September 28, 2013

Started out quite a bit busier at Oktoberfest today than it did yesterday. I have one, possibly 2 new volunteers for 2 counties.

There were forecasts of high winds on the coast today and I heard that it was windy a couple of hours north of here. Yeah, I heard there would be high winds today, but I figured we would be sheltered here in a small valley in the mountains. I figured wrong.

This evening, the wind came up and I was so glad that I staked my canopy down. OK, I used small little stakes, but that should be ok, right? Wrong. The next gust of wind ripped up my tent, stakes and all turned it upside down and threw it about 10-12 feet away almost into a creek down a 10 foot embankment. A airsoft team which was nearby ran over and grabbed the canopy and righted it.

I grabbed the middle center hinge and held on as the next gust came up, almost lifting me off my feet! Meanwhile airsoft team members were picking up my literature which was blowing all over the park. My chairs were blown over as was my table. The team of us managed to pick everything up and 2 of them organized my lit as I used mega stakes to anchor it again. By that time, other tents were blowing down, ripping and bending. The bandstand was destroyed. Almost everyone was packing up to leave. I decided to do the same. We finished packing up just as it started sprinkling.

Now we are back at the campsite, warm and cozy watching CSI and munching popcorn. This is the life!

I think we will head back tomorrow and will go back to my regular schedule on Monday. I am looking forward to getting back to my schedule after being so messed up last week! My body does not take well to late workouts!

I really like the new RV. It is a little odd sleeping in a 'cab-over', but do-able. Storm notwithstanding, it has been a nice couple of days away.

Have a blessed Sunday. See you tomorrow!

Hoping the winds will be over soon. Sorry your Octoberfest was a BLOW OUT. Good to know you had a good time anyway. Where the heck were you?

Glad all is OK. I do much better on a routine than winging it when we travel so I have learned to pack my own snacks.

We have had high winds too...but that's quite common for us. The history stories we had to read in high school often commented on how the wind made the settlers crazy. When it howls and blows for daze on end you begin to understand. Here in high desert country it can blow for miles and miles, picking up steam along the way. I love my wind chimes so I can tell how much wind there is...but get a bit nervous when they are whacking up against the side of the house! I'm sorry that I was smiling reading about your tent blowing away. I know it's not funny while it's happening but it was a great visual!!

Glad you're back in the warm of a new RV that you like. We've finally got leaves changing color because it's getting nippy at night...still the hard frost is a couple weeks off according to the weatherman but am going to transplant some of the plants I want to over-winter inside tomorrow or Monday, just to be on the safe side!
