Oh I love salad bars

Monday, September 23, 2013

You know what I like about salad bars sometimes? It's that I can try something new and not be committed to it. I can have a taste of something without having it be my whole meal.

Recently the salad bar in the cafeteria that my husband and I like to go to has added some new things. Some good, some not so good.

Now, don't get me wrong. I will never touch anything eggplant related. I am also smart enough to stay away from tunafish and egg salad because those things are more mayo than anything else. I already know that I generally like the sesame noodles even if they aren't the healthiest. If I do mostly lettuce and fresh garden veggies I will sometimes take a small bit of the noodles.

Today though it was "what is that white stuff?" Well it turned out to be orzo salad. I didn't know what orzo salad was really so I took some. It looked good so I actually took maybe more than I should have.

Well it turned out that orzo salad was blech. Luckily I had my nice garden veggies and lettuce to eat anyway. So into the trash went the orzo.

It is best to try something that way.

Why do you avoid eggplant? There are so many possible interesting variations ... you might surprise yourself and like some (or at least one). And they are such pretty shades of purple! :-)

I'm quite picky, I love salad bars, but only vege related items. I agree with you the mayo salad items have way too many calories and fat, so I too, stay away from them.

We have a lot of different things at the salad bar at work. I usually stick to plain veggies. It is a great opportunity to try new things though. emoticon

I'm like you - it's nice to be able to give something new a try without making a huge commitment to it. Every now and then you get a terrific surprise!

I agree that sometimes that is one of the best ways to try new things with no worries. My husband tries most of his "new" foods on cruise ships (as we don't do buffet style restaurants, even salad bars) much any more... just not cost effective/convenient.

Salad bars are the same for me! A few years back I decided that I was grown enough to try the bean salad and surprised even myself. I now love legumes on my salad!
