Feeling Fabulous in my Forties!!!

Sunday, September 22, 2013

The year I turned 40 could be considered a tragic year. It started in January when my best friends husband died of cancer. Six months later, I was diagnosed with Cervical cancer and as if that wasn't bad enough, 15 days later, my amazing mother-in-law was killed in a small plane crash. So the forties didn't start out the way I would have planned them.

Having cancer really changed things for me. Suddenly, the body I had known my whole life was different. It didn't respond to exercise and diet the way it had in the past. I was on hormone replacement and for several months I had to take it easy and not exercise like I used to. Slowly, the weight began to creep up, but it was so subtle, I didn't really notice it.

As the years passed, I had a few more obstacles to tackle. I ended up rupturing the plantar fascia in my right foot and required surgery. Again, I was off my feet and unable to exercise. Slowly I healed and just about the time I was able to really start working out again, I had to have surgery to remove two discs from my cervical spine. Here I was again with another setback. This surgery took place in August of 2012. In April of 2013 I got on my scale and realized that I had somehow managed to put on over 25lbs. The weird thing is, I didn't really feel it (probably the result of jeans that are kinda stretchy). I knew I had to do something. I realized that I wasn't getting enough protein in my diet to support the amount of exercise that I was getting in, so I switched things up and increased the protein and cut down on the processed carbs.

My body has finally healed to the point that I can really workout and I have found that great balance of nutrients in my diet. Last weekend my husband and I went to a celebration for his company and when we walked in, people turned their heads. I was bold enough to wear a white, fitted dress and I felt fantastic. This coming Friday, I will be turning 47, with two kids in college. I am officially an empty nester and I have never felt better. I have learned that life is short and we have to make the best of every moment that we are blessed to be here. The past 7 years definitely were not easy, but I never gave up, I kept trying till I found what worked for me.
