Freaky Friday - 20Sep13
Friday, September 20, 2013
My Friday started off normally until after I got the kids off to school. I took the day off from work because I have an eye appointment this morning and then an appointment for my son in the afternoon. I had asked my mom to take me to my eye doctor's appointment because I knew my eyes were going to be dilated and my mom agreed since it was her day off.
She called early to see if I wanted to go to breakfast; I thought that would be a great idea but told her I had to make sure my son got on the bus first. I told her she could come over because he would be leaving soon. She agreed and so I got him out the door and I got myself ready and headed outside to wait for her. She came and picked me up about 7:40am and we headed out because my appointment wasn't until 9:50 so we had plenty of time (or so we thought). The traffic was the normal traffic at that time of the day. We had just gotten over the railroad tracks and were talking about the Dairy Queen Employee and his kind act when my mom looked in her rearview mirror and commented that the person behind us was on the tracks. I thought at least there wasn't a train and about the time I was thinking that I was looking back and realized the railroad crossing arms were down and I saw the light of a train coming down the tracks. My mom and I both had the same idea that this wasn't going to end well. My mother pulled up as close as possible to the semi in front of us and honked her horn to try to get him to move up but he wasn't paying attention to her or the driver beside him who was also trying to get his attention. I was frantically trying to get the driver behind us to move over to the lane next to us because there seemed to be some room and he might avoid being hit. He was an older gentlemen (in his 70s) so reflexes weren't very quick but I'm not sure that a younger person would have had much luck either because everything happened so quickly. The driver pulled up as close as he could to my mom's car but it wasn't enough to complete clear the tracks. The rear corner of the driver side was struck by the train which pushed his car into my mom's car. My mother had her foot on the brake and had it press to the floor so that we won't hit the vehicle in front of us. We were stopped so well that when the driver behind us hit us the trains force flip his car up onto the sidewalk facing the opposite direction he had started in. It was all very scary but everyone seemed to be alright. My mom and I were very shaken up but were unhurt. The gentleman in the car behind us had a few bumps that we saw while at the scene but the EMS took him to be checked out some more. It wasn't until later that we realized both my mom and I knew the gentleman whose car had been struck by the train. The girls who were behind him were more shaken up by what they almost saw. It was most definitely an exciting morning but not one that I want to repeat.
I did make it to my appointment on time and that was the worst thing that happened to me today. My mom and I ended up going to lunch after my appointment instead which was nice. I had a great time spending time with my mom, but next time we do this I don't want that type of excitement.
