Bad Decision That Turned Out Okay

Friday, September 20, 2013

I do have a tendency to be impulsive sometimes, especially when I'm angry, the worst possible time to make decisions. Yesterday was one of those times, or maybe not.

I won't start by picking on a particular internet service provider. Actually, I will, but I just won't name them here in case someone works for them. Anyway, we've been with this same company for years and have been paying a ridiculous price for their fastest speed. I will admit that it is really fast, when it works. emoticon

Over the last year our internet has gone down more times than I can count. Tommy used to get so frustrated because he loved to keep in contact with all of his friends on Facebook. We would always do the whole unplugging everything, plugging it back in and waiting to see if it would come back up (all of you with problems know the drill). Sometimes it would come back up, sometimes not. On those occasions when it didn't, I would have to make the dreaded call, go through all of the obnoxious menus, get a technician on the phone who would make us go through the unplugging drill again, even though I would always explain that I'd already done this, and then they would inform me when a technician would be at my house (usually 2 to 3 days). emoticon They would usually come out, replace our modem, it would come back up and they would leave, only to have the problems begin again.

Yesterday was another one of those days. Around mid morning I went to send an important email out and NO internet signal. My son and I went through the drill and still no internet. I called our provider's customer service department only to have the rep try to give me a lower priced tier. Really? I guess he thought I would feel better about paying less for no service. emoticon This is where my impulsive behavior came into play. I told him "Turn my service off right now." He again asked me if the price was an issue and I AGAIN explained to him, much slower this time, "I t d o e s n o t w o r k." And again, I told him to turn it off immediately because I wasn't interested in paying any price for intermittent service. Now understanding how angry I was, he turned it off.

Next came the part where I began questioning my decision. I started calling around looking for a new provider. Because we live in a rural area, there was only one other provider and their speed in our area was pretty slow (probably too slow to use Netflix instant watch, which I love). Oh no, I had no service and no other good options! emoticon

I woke up this morning thinking I would have to tuck my tail between my legs and go grovelling back to my previous provider for service. emoticon
I kept putting off calling, and I'm sure happy I did. I received a call from the provider this morning thanking me for being a loyal customer - LOL - and asking for another chance to make it right. Okay, now I was feeling a little smug emoticon and told the rep I wasn't interested in paying a high price if they weren't going to figure out why I keep having problems. He offered to cut my bill significantly for one year (with no contract) if I would let them come out this weekend and check everything out to correct any problems. emoticon I agreed (of course) and I'll make sure they check all the wiring when they come out as I suspect that's where the problem really is.

They must have immediately turned it back on because my internet is now back up and working. I'll still make them check everything out because the on, off, on, off has been a pattern over the last year. Still, I'm happy they have restored my faith in them by promising to find the problem. Now we'll see if they keep that promise.

On a different issue, has anyone priced a new roof lately? I'm having sticker shock, but I have to have a new roof. Oh well, that's another story for another time.

This is my weekend to work so no hiking for me, but I hope you all have a wonderful weekend!

I understand the internet problem completely! I live in a rural county with only two internet providers. I switched earlier this year because my old provider had super expensive costs with totally horribly slow internet. It turns out it was the best decision I ever made. The other provider had a special on for internet and phone. Even though it's just for a year from what I've gathered it may end up costing the same at the end but service is 10 times the speed so Netflix works great and everything else too. It was the best decision I could have made so I'm hoping I'll think so next spring when the special pricing ends. For now I'm enjoying paying half of what I was. Good luck with your internet service.

This sounds just like a problem I had with my cable company and my hi=def tv. For 2 years I had miserable service and at least 6 cablebox changes. Lots of refunds tho'......
Finally, They gave me a box -----that works!!! Hallelujah!!!

    You sound great!!

How was the wedding?? Going to share??

Yes I know the feeling. We have had problems with our internet. My house had wiring problems and we blew up 4 internet modems..ugh... and yes we have had the roof replaced.(bad wind storm) hurricane force winds. But luckily the house insurance paid for it..

I am doing a major renovation on my house and my renovation bill is close to 30,000 and we aren't even done yet... ugh emoticon .

So yes I understand about home improvements.. the guys at Home Depot, Lowe's and other home improvement store love me. I spend too much cash and they are funny.. they know me by my name now and ask how much I am going to spend today.

Sometimes you just have to ... SAY IT ... then regret it. Felt good while you were doing it, though, I bet:)
It all worked out in the end ... karma? heheh. I don't think karma applies to this situation:) And let's hope sending someone out will solve the problem once and for all. That would be the icing on the cake.

RE roof replacement: I'd go w the best you can afford and with the best company quality-of-work wise -- you want problem free living for the next 25 years, right?

We had a roof redone after a wicked rainstorm, and went with the cheapest quote. We have a 2000 sf bungalow, and it was $8500 (!) 10 years ago. They did a shoddy job. We should have gone with the second quote. For $1000 more we would have had quality work done by a highly reputable, conscientious group. Instead, we have ongoing problems, and I feel anger every time I look at the roof.

Enough grouchiness -- I hope you're doing alright.

Sometimes it is a good idea to listen to that inner (impulsive!) voice. You didn't rant and rave like an insane person. You were definite and determined - and successful. Hopefully the techies will be able to diagnose what is causing the trouble.

Good for you,! In one of the places we lived we were having the same issue. Come to find out it was some kind of wiring issue on the outside where wire was exposed or something and when it rained which was often it quit working.

You just have to find the person willing to find out. Good luck!

Good for you. We have similar problems with our cable co., but not as bad as you have had. We too have thought about changing. Oh lordy, we need a new roof. We haven't priced yet. emoticon

That is so great that you had them eating out of your hand! I hate slow internet too! We have had them out to our house a few times too because they didn't get it right the first time, and we live in a big city!
I hope they get it right for you this time, Cindy!

Wow! Glad being tough worked out well. Sometimes we have to do that. Sorry you have to work this weekend instead of having some fun in the sun. But life is like that sometimes. I know only too well how many times I would rather be outside than working but still have to pay the bills and eat. Take care and know I'm thinking of you!
