SP Date 2599 - Would of never thought....

Saturday, September 14, 2013

Well Howdy! Welcome to my SP Blog Date 2599. It's been 2 1/2+ years since I last blogged here and I apologize. emoticon I logged in today for the sole purpose of refreshing my memory about Barley's birthday. I knew I had posted about Tippy's crossing over on here, so in flipping through the blog entries, I found it, and sure enough, while the exact day might be off, we are pretty close.

Too many things have happened over the years to bore you with, however, let me say this: (1) My weight today is 135.8 lbs, (2) I still am a NON SMOKER (5+ years, 6 in December), (3) I am a long distance RUNNER! emoticon (5k, 10k, 10 Miles, Halfs (13.1 miles).

Lets go back to # 3! Yes, I now RUN, and while I am not good at it, I still do it. It all started last November when my sister saw the 5th Annual Disney World Princess Half Marathon. She, god bless her soul, ran previously (not competitively, for fun, years ago - like 10 years ago), and decided that for MY birthday, she would sign us up. Told me that I needed my Passport for my birthday trip. Cool, we are going out of the country!!! NOPE!!!! Not even out of Florida!

What she didn't mention was part of the Marathon route was through EPCOT World Showcase! Needless to say, no amount of forewarning prepared me for the brutal reality of just how long 13.1 miles is when you DON'T TRAIN!!! emoticon

At the 15k point (9.3 miles) I hit the emotional brick wall. I was hot, tired, angry, miserable and wanted to quit. I truly was over the race at that point and had tears pouring down my face. My sister was a good bit ahead of me, 30 yards or so, and kept cheering me on when all I wanted to do was punch her in the face. emoticon

We passed a sign that said 3 miles to go. Then it hit me, I was ALMOST DONE - what was I giving up for??? The hard part was OVER a couple miles ago. So, I wiped my tears, turned up the tunes, slapped a smile (more of a grimace) on my face and slowly picked up the pace to where she was. As we got back to the Magic Kingdom, our last photo op was with Elasta Girl (better known as Mrs Incredible). I LOVE THAT CHARACTER. At that point, I was happy and just wanted to get the last mile under my belt so I could rest.

We hit the finish line (thank god) and got our medals. emoticon I was exhausted both mentally and physically. Got back to the car and she pops open a yogurt like, no big deal. I walk a couple of yards away and puke!

Took 3 days to walk upright again without pain thanks to my Chiropractor and Massage Therapist.

Fast forward a bit....ran in our HS Inaugural Spirit 5k, HealthFirst 5k/CPR Day (plus worked the rest of the day at the Merch tent at the Cocoa Beach Surfers for Autism event), Sanford Firecracker 5k, Deland's Suck it Up Buttercup 5k, Stone Island 10k (actually, that was 7.2 miles cuz I did one section twice) :-(, Oakmonte 5k for Alzheimers, ChicFila Run with the Herd 5k and coming up in 23 days (haven't trained enough for it),Tower of Terror 10 mile race for Autism Speaks. emoticon emoticon emoticon

Toss in 3 more 5ks Oct 13, 20, 26, plus the Space Coast Half in December, bring us to the 2014 Disney Enchanted 10k + Half Marathon, sometime in February. I think, if the count is right, we will have ran 87 miles this year.

The point of all this blithering saga? I never once thought, in a million years, that I would say I ran a Half Marathon, much less lay claim to 87+ miles of running in a year.

Oh yeah, plus, I learned to surf emoticon , Stand Up Paddle board, have done several zip line courses (straight zips and those with agility courses built in), kayaked on the Chattahoochee River, and volunteer with a great organization (Surfers for Autism) several times a year (which allowed me the opportunity to PARASAIL!!!).

I owe most of this progress to my sister, who's bucket list I have been graciously invited along for, but also to myself, for having the courage to get off my butt and JUST DO IT!

It hasn't been the easiest couple of years, however, I feel good, I look good and am happy with myself physically at this point in my life. Still emoticon poop crazy most of the time, but that's okay. At least I am here to talk about it.

Carpe Diem

I loved your blog! Sister's can be wonderfully mean can't they? emoticon Wow to have done your first 1/2 sans training and then to continue on with running! Your are tough. It sounds like you are having a blast, I would make sure you get some of your bucket list in though and make sure you bring your sister along emoticon I too am running the Space Coast 1/2. That will be my first and I am super excited/nervous. Best wishes and good luck. emoticon
