Mom's health rollercoaster

Wednesday, September 11, 2013

I am glad I traveled to California and visited my mom and family this past weekend. Her health is a rollercoaster. She was upset on Friday and Saturday, because a new open oozing sore had broken out on her leg. This is an obvious sign of the infection in her bone spreading. That night she was very ill – shaking and nauseated (also related to the infection). Her doctor visited the next day, and mom agreed to go on IV antibiotics. She had previously refused treatment other than palliative care (she is on hospice). But her doctor convinced her that she would be more comfortable with the IV medication. She did seem in better spirits and had a better appetite on Sunday and Monday, but it is too early to tell if the medication is helping.

My sister from Pittsburgh was visited, and my other sister and brother also visited. Mom was very grateful that we ran errands and brought her fruit. We buy all kinds of fruit for her – but it never tastes the way she imagines. She cannot taste most foods, only extreme sweet and salty flavors.

She is a smart, funny, wonderful mom. I hate to see her suffer. I am happy when she is feeling well enough to enjoy life from her nursing home bed. She still loves to look at the trees outside her window.

Ali please catch me up on your mom. The antibiotic IV's will get the infection under control. I hope she doesn't have MRSA. My grandmother got it from the hospital on her leg. She had fallen and cut her leg. They kept her, because of her age at the time. After a long stay the MRSA showed up. It was awful for her. She did live to be 100 years old, but it was not pleasant for her the last 6 months of her life.

I do hope you mom is better and back in the nursing home where she is happier. She is so pretty. You look a lot like her. I am glad you do get to go see her. I know it makes her so happy to see her kids. I am praying for you and her.

I am so sorry I haven't been online much and staying in contact as much as I use to. I am still dealing with grief. I am doing better. I do have days that are still bad. I miss my sister so very much. It is losing a big part of me.

I'm so sorry that your mother's bone infection is spreading, Alison, and glad that she accepted the antibiotics. It's wonderful that your family is able to be with her so often.
It sounds as if she is getting really good care, but it is still very difficult for everyone.
Take good care of yourself, you must be exhausted.

I am so sorry for this rollercoaster, for her and for you and the rest of your family... I love the beautiful smiles in this picture, and it is always good to see you! I am thinking of you lots. Even though my mom is in a different situation/illness, it is heart breaking too, and I feel it makes me understand your pain and worry better.
