Violating the "Rules" of taper

Taper period: a period of rest and preparation for a big race. Typically carb and rest filled.
Before my last race, I did a slothy taper - in other words, I used taper as an excuse to sit on my butt all week. And eat bread. Performance was identical to the year before. This weekend's Triathlon with DOGLADY down in Sandy Hook NJ, I'm breaking all the rules.
I ran for 5 miles on Tuesday - hadnt run in a while, so it was a stretch distance. Thursday I went for an ST class (BodyPump) 50 minutes and boy am I sore. Yesterday (Friday) I went for a hour bike ride. It was lovely weather and I thouroughly enjoyed myself, but I'm still sore from the class.
I am resting today (Saturday) more from a need to clean the house, pack and drive, than from any tapering urges. I'm going to stretch thoroughly tonight - or I might not. I might be having such a good time with my aunt who's house I am staying at that I might forget.
At this point I have made my peace with the idea that I will *never* be the fastest one out there. I do these things for ME. Because it makes ME feel GOOD.
And the bling. I really like race medals.
I'm starting a new job on Monday. Still (officially) a temp position, but for at least a year its mine. There is a possibility that the person may retire, which I might get lucky. We will see what and where the year brings me!
