#backontrack - I'm workin it!

Well, the August back on track challenge will be coming to an end soon.

I was bummed when heal pain set in and I suspected plantar faciitis (which was confirmed yesterday). But Spark has taught me to arm myself with information, no sulking.


I read an article on spark, watched a video of a podiatrist discussing it and attended a running clinic at work where it was discussed among other running issues. I immediately jumped into action and the pain has been minimal.

I saw the doctor (who is also a runner) about it yesterday and he said I am doing everything he would recommend...

-Getting my running analyzed and properly fitted for shoes... DONE
-Improve strength in calves and stretching them a few times a day.. IN PROGRESS Several times I day I find some stairs to hang my heals over stretching the calves.
-Massage heal and foot daily... IN PROGRESS Every morning I roll my foot across a 5lb weight while watching the news.
-Foam roller to massage my calves... IN PROGRESS I use this every evening.

He said if it gets worse over the next four weeks, he will send me for a cortisone shot and he sees no reason to skip the 10K I signed up the end of September.

He also suggested shoe inserts which I bought yesterday and I'm loving them.

So I'm hitting my August goals, I'm doing a full-body stretch three times a week, the calves are getting done several times a day and I am getting five to six servings of freggies each day. That one has taken some work, I have very rarely done that in the past.

I am diligent about my pushups each day. Yesterday I did my deck of cards upper body workout so many many pushups were done!

Two-minute planks..... this is still kicking my butt but I have hit 90 seconds. I was pretty proud of myself at yoga the other night. I was FINALLY able to go from high plank to low plank and hold the low plank for five seconds.

I have three more days to make the two-minute plank. I think I can, I think I can, I think I can!

    So sorry to hear about the PF! That is no fun. I'm lucky not to have to deal with that but hubby does. Good luck getting it resolved so you don't need the shot and don't have to continue fighting it.

    And congrats on the planks! GREAT job! Very impressive stuff!

    You are doing awesome! You totally rock, Kellie! The high plank to low plank accomplishment is fantastic! You are very focused and than is something to be proud of! So happy that the Doc said to go ahead with plans for the 10K! WooHoo! I hope your PF heals're doing All you can for it.

    Can't remember if I mentioned on another blog of your, but I dealt with that plantar fasciitis a few years back. Foot doc said it was from strain on my instep due to age related changes in my foot. I wore inserts in all of my shoes for some time which was a bummer because I love cuttsie little shoes. The inserts and the stretches fixed the problem. Now I make sure most of my shoes have good support and only wear my cuttsies once in a while. I can tell right away when I need to start my stretches again.

    Just got new tennies myself the other day and also bought inserts for them. Going to try them out today ( if the humidity doesn't kill me ).

    BTW, not sure if your doc mentioned, but going barefooted is suppose to be a big no-no!

    I struggle with plantar fasciitis off and on, too, so I feel your pain! Good that you are really taking care of yourself, and hope you feel better quickly!
