Getting a Second Job

Tuesday, August 27, 2013

I've decided that I'm going to get a second job through the holidays. My husband and I both changed jobs and both of us are much happier, but making less money than we used to make. As a result, although we are making ends meet, we never seem to have any extra.

My dog needs a $750 surgery and it breaks my heart to see her struggling daily to walk comfortably. My husband's birthday is next month, and although I'd love to suggest we skip the gift giving this year, gifts are my husband's "love language" so it is really important to him. Then my mother's birthday is in October, she is also not one to accept a "no gift" birthday. Then it's November and time to start buying Christmas presents.

Gifts are not important to me and I've been trying to convince my family that we should stop exchanging presents except for buying for the kids, but I've given up on that since no one else wants to stop.

On top of all that, my running shoes have got a hole in them but I can't afford to replace them! So you can see why I feel the need to get a 2nd job to bring extra cash in.

So what does all this have to do with losing weight? I'm concerned that if I have a much busier schedule, it will be too easy for me to find excuses not to work out or to make an unhealthy food choice.

I do 90% of my working out early in the morning, so really there should be no excuse to skip it. As far as the food, I will just have to plan ahead. That's what slow cookers are for, right?

Hopefully, all that extra walking around will mean I burn more calories so theoretically, I should lose even more weight as long as I don't use the 2nd job as an excuse to slack off. And really, I have so much energy nowadays -- last year I wouldn't have had the energy to take on a 2nd job.

I have an interview tonight at PetSmart. I figure if I am going to work a second job it should be something I can really enjoy, and I love animals.

Wish me luck!!

Yup. Planning would be the key. And you have to "make an appointment" with your kitchen on the weekends or an occasional evening to prepare easy stuff for lunches and dinners so you have no excuse to eat poorly. I still struggle to get my minimum of veggies in because if I don't prep them on Sunday, the whole week wobbles!

emoticon I know how it feels to need that extra money and for everything to be so tight; you do the best you can and i hope you have people you can rely on to help you through.

Good luck on your interview! Id love a job like PetSmart - im such a huge animal lover! My fur babies are my joy in life.

Do your best to stay on top of the food planning and exercise. If you do get a job like petsmart you will probably get a chance to walk around a lot and a fitbit or pedometer will let you track that; great way to burn those calories. If you are on cash try standing on one foot for a while to build core strength, do a wee bit of walking on the spot when no one is in try to be creative and see what small things you can work into your job to boost calorie burn, Each additional movement is a great step towards that goal; especially if your exercise routine does take a bit of a hit at first.

Good luck with the second job! I know it was tough when I was doing it nearly 10 years ago! I was younger, but not much fitter and didn't have kids! Pet smart should be fun!

Good luck at your interview tonight! I'm sure you'll find a way to keep up that morning exercise. You'll feel much better when you get it out of the day and start your day!

I agree Pet Smart will be a great place to work and I am sure you will get great exercise. The bags of dog food will be great strength training.

I loved your blog, because it made me realize I am not the only one struggling with these issues. I am also struggling financially, so I know the kind of pressure that brings with it. Actually, that tends to cause me to eat more! Maybe when you get your second job, you can build in some exercise time with it. For example, when I used to work at the mall, I would use my break to walk around the mall. Also, I was more likely to eat less when I was working as opposed to just sitting at home. Good luck with your interview!
    p.s. I love animals, too!
