An Affair with Food

So I LOVE to eat. Not in the emotional sense. I see food as an experience. I love to see the variety in color, to explore the way tastes work together (or don't work together), and how textures vary in the same food simply by how it's prepared. Plus, one of the best ways to experience a new culture is through their food, so you can actually get a taste for the way someone else lives simply by entering a restaurant or looking up a recipe. Food is really an incredible thing, and we need to eat to survive, so that's a bit of an incentive.

My problem is that because I see food as an activity and one that I love, I overindulge. I'll go for that extra bit, even if I know I shouldn't. I want to experience more of it. It's what I use to explore and experience life because I feel stuck. That's the habit I need to break.

It's not that I don't want to continue my romance with food. I think it's great that I love to experience new cuisines or indulge in different sorts of produce, because that allows me to try all sorts of things that are very good for me. Also, elimination diets never work for me, so I know that is and never will be a viable route for me to take. I've just realized that I need to control it, to limit myself so that I don't sabotage myself over and over again.

So how do you control yourself from overindulgence? How do you remind yourself to listen to your body and let what you need take precedence over what you want?

    I am much like you in my love for food. Taste, texture, smell, appearance. I'm finding though that the best tactic for me to keep from eating extra servings is to include something spicy or really flavorful in my diet. Spicy or hot foods satisfy me without having to eat an extra serving. It's those smoother bland comfort foods that leave me craving more, for some reason.

    The adage that helps me is; "Discipline is just choosing between what you want now and what you want most."

    I may want more of a food, but what I want most is my healthier leaner body. And the satisfaction that I am in control and I have done a good job listening to my body.
