CARB NITE SOLUTION... ANYBODY??? ps.. this is sorta longish.

Thursday, August 22, 2013

Okay, first off... this isn't a blog post to strike the crazy "low carb" "no carb" "carbs are fine" debate. I myself am skeptical of any diets that restrict entire food groups.. however...

My sister has been reading this book which is the carb nite solution diet. She started a week ago, and has lost 6lbs. She knows that this is a lot for one week and that it is going to be mainly water, but her pants are already more loose. (She is an average size.. but to me she is small!) She is loving it, and so of course she is excited and wants me to join.

I was wondering if any of you have heard of this diet or have done it yourself? The author of the book says that you should not do this diet for more than 6 months. He knows that it isn't good to do this for the rest of your life, but that it is for losing FAT while maintaining MUSCLE.

Here's the basics (I'm still learning) basically you limit your carbs to under 30 grams a day. you do this for 9 days, and on the 10th day, you have a "carb nite." After about 3 or 4pm you eat carbs. All and any carbs that you want. (once that initial 10 days... you then have a carb nite once a week)

You want to try and pair a healthy fat and a protein at each meal, supposedly If your fat cells fill up with good fats instead of carbs, they are way easier to unload. And then your cells are already filled up and they signal to your brain that you are full, and then your body burns carbs off as energy and it doesnt store them as fat. (sounds cool enough)

My first reaction was that I didn't want to eat only bacon, cheese, eggs and meat all the time (My usual thought when someone mentions paleo or low carb) but here is the deal, you can spend those carbs however you want. I will have to give up my apples and carrots, they have a lot of carbs! But I can still have my salads, celery, raspberries... staples in my diet right now. Yes they will take up my carbs.. but I would feel a lot better eating a big salad with raspberries, chicken and spinach.. and take up some carbs.. then eating only cheese and bacon with no or little carbs. Catch my drift? I dont want to feel like i'm clogging my arterys!

I keep going back and forth with this diet... I think when it comes down to it i'll try it for the initial 10 days, and then decide. What could it hurt right? But I do want sneak in as many veggies within my carb allotment as possible!

Anyway, sorry this has been so long, just kind of thinking out loud, if you stuck it out, MAJOR PROPS TO YOU! :D

I haven't heard of that diet before but I have done the very low carb thing for a while. The point is to go into ketosis, where your body burns fat instead of carbs... because you're taking very little in. I wouldn't do the extreme low carb thing (as in under 20 a day) for more than 2 weeks. It's meant to be a quick jolt to your system so you start burning fat.

After the two weeks, you can start adding in healthy carbs such as fruit and yogurts, but not too high.

You keep adding a healthy amount of carbs every two weeks or so until your diet is balanced.

I'm not saying how many carbs, although the diets will tell you, because I believe that everyone is different and you need to listen to your body on that matter.

The first time I did it I lost 40lbs in two months and felt great. I was young and didn't get the idea that it was supposed to be a lifestyle change, fell into old habits, and gained it back plus some. I tried again and again to back into ketosis but I think if you do it enough times, your body catches on to your tricks and it gets harder.

A few years ago I read The Zone Diet book. It speaks of balancing carbs, fat, and protein with each meal and snack. This is what I go by now, not strictly.... I eyeball things. I feel better and not deprived of anything like fruit or yogurts but I also don't feel like I'm being weighed down by a higher fat diet.

According to my tracker I still stay around 80 carbs a day, mostly from fruit and vegetables and I don't feel like it's too much or too little.

I hope this long story helped a little. emoticon

I don't know, this just doesn't sound good. An eating plan that you should do for only 6 months just sounds unsafe. I'm not sure how much you are looking to lose but I'm looking at 100 pounds. I've lost 18 since June and feel really good about that. I'm really happy with how SP has worked out for me. Diet AND exercise are key. Measuring foods, logging what's been eaten. This plan really works.

well carbnite never heard o but low carb a lot of people and a lot of sparkpeople like as low a carb as possible. but in doing this fat takes over in your food. loosing weight but skeptical you can gain it back if you don't do this on a regular basis. I have tried everything. they all work but my patience is low. I kind of do over eating on Thurs. My weigh in at TOPS is thurs morning. So after really watching I mean really watching I go hog wild after weigh in for one day. I guess it gives you a sence I can splurge maybe one day
