Pleasant surprise

Wednesday, August 21, 2013

So I had a pleasant surprise today.

Do you remember yesterday when I said that garlic scapes n' bacon was palatable but not good? Well, apparently garlic scapes are one of those foods that just get better the longer they are in the fridge. I ate it today and it was positively delicious. *surprise*

I mean, I'm still going to try other recipes, just to get more experience and a greater variety of tastes, but hey! At least the next 4 days of finishing it off will be a pleasure instead of a chore.

I forgot to talk about my fifth experiment yesterday! I can't believe it! I have failed as a food blogger! :p

Well, I made something else on Sunday, I made what somebody else called kiebalsa? I don't even know what that is. I made a stir fry with cabbage and leftover brats. I threw in some mushrooms too come to think of it. Anyway. It is so awesomely delish. I mean, pure pleasure soaking into every tastebud. Cabbage really is awesome when it's cooked. When it's raw it's kind of awful, but cooked...nom nom. The best thing about this kiebalsa thing is that all I used was salt and pepper and it turned out fantastic. I guess it's true, I really do prefer simply seasoned, ie. BLAND, food.

I guess I have simple tastes. Ah well.

Then last night I was really extra brave.
I baked that cookie dough I talked about in my toaster oven!

It was not an unmitigated success. .... But it did work...kind of...

I think I will have to tinker with either the recipe or the toaster oven a bit. The cookies looked SO GOOD while they were baking, they puffed up beautifully and everything...but then when I took them out...they went flat.

And even though they were burning, they weren't finished. How is that possible?!?! How can something burn without being fully cooked?!?! Mystery.

So, they stuck to the tinfoil like none other, but..they were good....I ate four. (guilt) I couldn't help it! Pieces of like 8 cookies stuck to the tinfoil, so I had to eat the pieces that stuck!

Anyway...I know one of the problems was that I didn't have enough baking soda, so that's one reason why they went flat. Also, I think baking 9 cookies in my toaster oven was a bit presumptuous of me. Next time I'll try four or maybe five. Other than that...I'm not sure how to fix the flat and not cooked problem.

Any ideas?

Oh, and here is my bento for the day. So far this one take the prize as being the one I am most proud of! I mean, look at all of the pretty colors!!!!

Another lovely lunch! Keep up the good work.
About the cookies, maybe the setting on your oven was too high and they cooked too fast which made them burn and not be done enough.

I feel very lucky to have found your blog here, it was an enjoyable read! emoticon
I love scapes, too. I will admit though, that I use them as a decoration in my kitchen for a few days before I get around to eating them, they're that cute. They do indeed get better as they sit!
Kielbasa is a particular type of smoked sausage. They are classically served with cabbage, onions,(beer!) They are very comforting to me.
Lovely Bento - thanks for sharing the pics! emoticon
Please continue on, I'll be back, if I may. emoticon
