Feeling Good About the Exercise
Monday, August 12, 2013
Still working on my eating a bit, but I think I have a great exercise routine down.
I've been walking 3-4 miles a day at a park near my house. It's a dirt path, so there are hills and slopes and plenty of twists and bends to keep the walk interesting. It's also exactly a mile, so I always know how far I've gone, which I love.
Every other day I do a "45-minute" strength training. I don't think it takes 45 minutes, but that's what Spark enters for it for me, so I'm good with that. It involved curls, crunches, leg lifts with resistance, full-body pop-up squats, shoulder presses, and some tricep work. The main reason I'm sticking to this is because it doesn't actually take 45 minutes. I can do it in the living with my daughter. She thinks it's funny to watch Mommy count to 20 several times.
My effort to be more active in general is working out OK. I've been reading a lot lately, which throws it off since that requires sitting, but we walked around the theme park all day Saturday and I've been bringing my daughter to the park now that I can put her in a swing and let her go down the slide while I hold her. I know I become more and more active as she gets older. She's close to walking, which is going to give me a huge increase in general activity level....
Also helpful to the activity level will be starting work. I'm still doing interviews, but I was offered a job today. Not exactly what I was looking for, but I'm excited about it. The director of the daycare my daughter goes to is hiring new teachers. It's not my school system job, but it will give me more time with my daughter and the pay evens out to about the same that I'd be making as a teacher once you factor in the reduced tuition benefit. It would take me out of the public school circuit, though, which would make finding a teaching even more difficult next year: it'll be a year of experience that isn't very relevant to the types of jobs I would be applying for. That last fact is the only reason I'm still trying to get interviews for my last 3 resumes.
All in all, I'm feeling good. The higher energy levels are starting to kick in and I can do a 3-mile walk without achy shins and calves. Definitely seeing the improvements.
