Avocado, anyone?

Sunday, August 11, 2013

Newtink made a comment in her "Lets Get Fruity" blog that made me turn to Google. I have an avocado shape, but I never googled it to really see what it meant. All Spark said was 'The less common "avocado" shape is somewhere between an apple and a pear, with health risks higher than a pear-shaped person, but somewhat lower than a true apple-shaped person."' However, I found this on Wellbeing.com:

Avocado Body Shape

If you have an avocado body shape your physique is somewhere between an apple and a pear shape.

It is believed that avocado body shapes are affected by an inefficient thyroid. This is the gland that affects metabolism and helps to explain why avocado body shapes may tend to gain weight easily all over but then find it very hard to lose. However, as weight gain is evenly distributed all over the body, avocado body shapes the problematic visceral fat that apple shapes suffer. Therefore, if you can sustain a healthy weight, your body shape will not elevate your risk of heart disease, breast cancer, colon cancer or diabetes.

Avocado body shapes may find they have an easily triggered stress response and emotional states which may contribute to weight gain, interfere with sleep, lower mood or cause muscle tension in the body.

They may also have a lower level of general energy so it is vital that you motivate yourself to exercise and be active as this will also improve your lymphatic drainage and counter insufficiency in thyroid hormones.

I have never heard of avacado shape either. But I like you, was told im avacado. I just literally got done reading the same google search you posted from welbeing. I have an larger than normal thyroid but they always check it and there is never anything wrong with it. I cant help but wonder with these though:

This.. ha ha... part of the reason i joined sp cause i have no energy and my sleep is messed up and i seem to despite my best efforts...keep gaining.

I thought spark would help me out, maybe i was doing something wrong, maybe it would give me some balance. Im doing good so far but its only been two weeks and i still have really low energy. This "avacado" thing makes sense as to what the shape means. well maybe with all the great people on here and all that spark is offering maybe i might get my sexy curve back

Interesting info. Hadn't heard about "avocado" shapes. As an apple - and someone who has had an apple shape since infancy - I wonder about the validity of the body shape information. I mean, if we were all tall and willowy, would we also be healthy? Thinking not. One of the thinnest folks I know has Diabetes I. Horrible illness that had nothing to do with her body shape.

Oh well. Interesting about your thyroid too. Mine gave out at age 12...

This is really interesting, I had never heard of avocado or banana shape before, just apple and pear. I never really fit into either of those fully, but it sounds like I am more of an avocado myself. I need to get in and get a physical soon, maybe I should have them check my thyroid at the same time.

    Thanks for sharing the article!

OK...there is something else we have in common!
That is interesting. Wishing there was a "magic avocado fix" but I didn't see that in this blog! I guess we will just have to keep chipping away in our avocado-turtlish sort of way!!!

TBH I can never figure out what "body shape" I am lol!

It is very interesting that this holds true for you, more information like this might be very helpful in your journey, and others.

Thanks for the info. I saw something on Dr. Oz about a month or so about this, but he called it a box shape. I had never heard of either the avocado or the box shape before but it piqued my interest because I do have thyroid problems. Avocado sounds better than box LOL!
