DASH IT OFF

Thursday, August 08, 2013

I started on Monday, August 5 Phase One of the Dash Diet. Phase One lasts for 14 days and it is to supercharge your metabolism, wean your body off toxins like sugar and processed foods, as well as breads and starches (except beans), during this time all the visceral fat in the tummy area will start melting away!

What brought me to this decision is I had blood work done in July that revealed 4 pts over normal on triglycerides and a low "good" cholesterol. These two factors are markers for heart disease. Heart disease is not hereditary in my family so it has to be my weight and all the CRAP I have put in it over the years. That was the line in the sand.

Enough is enough. So I read the DASH book and it makes total sense. It's total foundation is built upon everything we already know. Fruits, veggies, lean meats, nuts/seeds, and low fat dairy. With this said, you will notice there aren't any chips, Cheetoes, Taco Bell, Sonic Blasts listed. It is the BASICS of eating as we all know them.

I am going to beat the Food Companies that put all the chemicals and toxins in our foods. I will not eat processed foods. I will not be a junkie to sugar!

So, despite frowns from my husband, I embarked on Monday. Today is day 4. I have eaten well below my allotted calories, and have stayed well within my protein and fat nutrient levels.

Tuesday, I woke up with a low grade headache, but it soon went away. I am not hungry at all....but every afternoon just about (2:30-3 pm) my brain starts telling me to have some sugar...I mean it's like a junkie wanting drugs or an alcoholic wanting a drink. It has been so overpowering that I would have walked the 15 miles to the nearest SONIC for a BLAST, but this darn Texas heat would have KILLED ME.

So I've made it to half way through Day 4 and I'm not hungry, have plenty of energy and am really sleeping better than I have in weeks. I know I can do this. I just have to plan and double check what I am putting in my mouth. It is very hard not to have fruit or bread. But, after my 14 days, the gloves are off and I can eat all those things in moderation.

Since Monday, I've lost 1.4 pounds, my skin is clearer and my pores are smaller. I am so charged up with the weight loss and getting the toxins out of my body.

I have ten days left on this Phase One.

It's odd to think what has become normal for us to put in our bodies isn't it! & people wonder why they gain so much weight. Once you can see where you've been going wrong it's easy to fix. Though saying that I will never cut anything totally out of my diet. If I really want something I will let myself have a small amount of it to keep me satisfied and stop me reaching for anything else. But we're all different! Good job, I bet you'll have lost loads by the end of your 14 days! x

Thank you for your kind words. I am very excited about this 14 day journey...not only is it eliminating the junk out of my eating, but I'm learning a lot about myself.

The Dash Diet, by Marla Heller, MS, RD. There is a cookbook also.

It is so straight forward...I don't know how we got so off track with our eating?

When I went off bread/pasta etc it took me 4 days to *start* to feel like I wasn't going to die. About another week to finally feel like I could live without it. I lost 6 pounds.

Now (about three months later) I don't even miss it. I have a couple of slices of bread a month. Maybe. I admit I dreamed about a fresh loaf of right-out-of-the-oven bread one night and woke up kinda longing for it...but other than that, it's been great! I still have some fruit - it was the bread I wanted to get off.

I didn't realize there was a book, I've only ever seen articles about it. I should go read up on it again.
