Update the Day After

Thursday, August 01, 2013

Hi Spark friends,
Thank you to all of you who read and commented on my blog from yesterday. Today was an emotional day, but we are still remaining grateful. We had the difficult job of cleaning up the mess left from yesterday. It was a tearful process. My husband and I embraced often.

The ABC news van came today. (Now we have had all three major networks~Yeeesh) The reporter was kind and respectful. I gave him the facts but still declined an on air interview. I was shocked when my son alerted me to Google "pitt bulls" followed by the name of our town. There was a page of major news sources, both stations and newspapers, with long articles about the event (even though they all called our hairless sheep, goats). It was important to us, but I didn't think we were "breaking news", as the reporters kept calling it. I'm naive!

However, the good news is that Lulu is still healing. We are treating her wounds. She is on some good medications orally and topically. Mary, our 8 month old sheep that escaped the attack, is Lulu's shadow. They are good companions for each other.

The owner of the dogs came to our house when he returned from work and found his dogs gone and a notice on his door. He was shocked, sincerely apologetic, and offered to cover expenses. We've had many expenses and will have more vet bills. He later met us at the back of our property, when we were treating Lulu and feeding, and continued to apologize. The animal control officer had contacted him and he signed over the third dog to be euthanized. It's sad on so many levels.

Here is a picture of Lulu and Mary. I avoided a view of Lulu's wounds........too gross.
Thank you again Spark friends for all your love and support!!!

I'M HAPPY TO HEAR THAT LULU IS HEALING AND HAS MARY BY HER SIDE........... I WAS WONDERING ABOUT THE NEIGHBOR........ THAT IS ONE THING THAT DOES HELP THIS WHOLE SITUATION...... HE IS SORRY FOR WHAT HAPPENED AND WANTS TO HELP PAY SOME OF THE VET BILLS......... IN OTHER CASES I'M SEEN WHERE PEOPLE THAT OWNED THE DOGS WERE MAD AND TRYING THINGS TO GET THE PEOPLE BACK FOR REPORTING IT......... SO AT LEAST HE KNOWS HOW WRONG IT WAS.

Leslie, I'm just so sorry that it's taken a tragic incident like this one - plus your sweet pets' suffering - to bring attention to the dangers of improperly trained and/or socialized pit bulls. I wish poor Lulu continued swift healing and know that Mary's presence must be a reassuring one to her right now. I'd feel pretty savagely attacked myself if this happened to a beloved pet of ours... and then to have the media converge... Well, no one could've handled the situation - or the media - with as much maturity, fairness, and kindness as you and your husband did. I just wish I could wave a wand and make it all a complete unreality, something that never happened.

Sending you all lots of healing hugs and good wishes for happier days, which I know are on the horizon - Susan

What a pleasant surprise the dog owner allowed the third dog to be euthanized. The world is a safer place. If you see a dove tomorrow or today....it will be another sign. I know this is right out of "Moonstruck" the signs and all. LOL!

Happy to hear you are recovering from an emotional trauma. It is nice to know someone who isn't wanting the publicity or notoriety of this moment. You are a class act; you are completely devoted to your animals and of courses to all humanity. I am so proud to be your SparkFriend! emoticon

Thank you for the update. I am so glad that the dog owner (I just can't refer to those beasts as "pets") was apologetic and did the right thing by offering to cover expenses. I hope you will take him up on it as *HE* should be learning a hard lesson about responsibility. He should feel darn lucky if you decide not to sue him. I have no doubt that you would be awarded a bundle.

I am glad Lulu and Mary have found comfort in being together. I hope you will also open your hearts to more animals in the near future!
