If At First You Don't... KEEP ON PADDLING!!!

Let it be known that Ruby is still working at trying to get back into a healthy groove. It seems that no matter how many letters I write to myself, nor how often I tell myself, which just happens to be every morning, of every day, of every week, "I will make good food choices. I will exercise today", I come to the end of my work day, and once again my hand slips off my boat, and of course the boat drifts a bit further away. Once again I find myself struggling to reach it in the hopes that I can grab a hold and climb back on board. One more time I'm battling to stay afloat in treacherous waters. I know there are many life preservers all around, some tossed to me by my Spark family and friends, others tossed to me by perfect strangers, and everyone doing their best to help pull me to safety. As I blindly reach out my hand, I lose sight of goals because those gosh darned cheese twists, potato sticks, M & M's, bologna or hot dogs floated into my vision, causing me to miss reaching the life preserver before me.

For those of you who may still be fighting the same battle as I am, remember that as long as you keep your head above water, you will NOT drown. You may take in excess water, much more than you'd like, but keep on treading that water. Keep on doing the dog paddle and keep reaching out to all those hands tossing you life preservers to help you make your way back to, what at times feels like, your elusive boat. All it takes is one preserver to help keep you afloat and head you back into the right direction. Eventually you will reach the boat which YOU will help steer to your shore of a healthy lifestyle.

Keep on reaching, it's right there in front of you. You can see it. The more you continue to dog paddle to stay afloat, the better you become and eventually you will learn how to swim, rather than just staying afloat.

    Lose the snacks. Just refuse to buy them or keep them in the house. Save that money to reward yourself with something healthier. Don't give up now! HUGS!

    Hi Ruby,
    This is beautifully written. It comes through loud and clear that you are reaching deep down to your toes for the sincere emotion you expressed. So many of us can relate on so many levels. They teach in Al-anon that laying 'it' out there is not only risky because it gives everyone else a peek inside you, but the act of sharing lets you really look at the issue. You lay it on the table, so to speak.
    I have found imagery to be very help and have only recently given a face, if you will, to my health and the detractors I allow to influence me.

    Yes, that's me, too. I have been Sparking for so long, yet I haven't lost weight. But yesterday I started again, and hopefully THIS will be the time I stick with it long enough to change my life.

    Best thing for me is to just not have it in the house. If I can make sure I have something healthy and low-cal to snack on and there isn't any junk food to grab my attention first, I will be fine, but I already know it's a setup for failure if I have a bag of chips and dip or candy there waiting for me.

    Mom - we all have experienced this frustration. If we hadn't we probably wouldn't be on Sparkpeople! So yes, you have your life preserver, you are doggie paddling along and you keep your head above water. The best way to get closer to that boat is to throw the cheese twists, potato sticks, m&ms, bologna and hot dogs overboard. while you're still paddling or hanging on to the dock you will find your load so much lighter if you can toss those away. Remember the feeling you get when you make that one healthy decision and then when you make many. You bubble with excitement and pride. I try to remind myself the very same thing. If you have to do it slowly, eliminate one of those items or just buy a tiny bag to satisfy a craving, then don't buy more - just savor the taste of those and if all else fails remember those foods are full of GMOs and are not doing you any good. You can do this, you know you can.

    I do a slow run MWF at the Riverwalk at Boott Mills. 6:30ish. We could meet. We start together. I go my speed. You go yours. We meet again on my return. We end together.
