Hike, Goal Update, Mom

Sunday, July 21, 2013

Another great hike today! I took a group to Canyon Creek Meadows (same area as last hike), but we hike a different side hike off the loop. It was also challenging, because of a difficult stream crossing (one hiker fell in), and we included an off trail section to hike around Wasco Lake. Off trail hiking in an area with downed trees uses LOTS of different muscles! 3 other hikers from our group did the hike that I did last week – they saw two mountain goats walking across a snow field! WOW!

Cats ears (white flower) and Larkspur

I have kept to my July goals for 3 weeks now. It is not that hard -- I know I HAVE to do it. I am controlling my GERD much better through dietary changes. I have lost 5.2 pounds so far this month WOO HOO.

NSV: I took my nice silk outfit that is too large to the seamstress for alterations. She is taking it in by about 3 inches around my torso, 4 inches in the hips, and 2 inches off each thigh. WOO HOO! (Not sure what everyone else does – but I have spent a little money on alterations of some really nice outfits. It’s much cheaper than buying new ones!) My other favorite special occasion outfit has kept changing sizes along with me – it shrinks a little every time it goes to the dry cleaner. I did NOT know that would happen (outfit was EXPENSIVE) and I would be very upset if I hadn’t been shrinking along with the beautiful dressy suit!

Mom is still very ill and still on hospice. My brother spent last week with her, and my younger sister is with her this week. The infection in her bones has flared up and she is uncomfortable, but she doesn’t feel ready for morphine. I talk to her often, but I can only get off work to fly down there once a month or so. Hospice has been great, but Mom is very tired. On the plus side, her appetite (at least for fruit, cookies and potato chips!) is a bit better and her vital signs are stable. I am not judgmental about Mom’s food choices – she can’t taste most flavors, she can only taste extremely sweet and extremely salty. Her closet looks like a cookie and Lays potato chips shop!

Congratulations on the weight loss! I definitely agree that it's worth having good clothes altered rather than buying new things.

Glad that your sister and brother have been able to spend time with your mother, and also glad that she can still enjoy some foods.

Take it easy, and keep tracking!

It's good that your mom is eating anything. At her age and in her health just getting something into her can be difficult.

emoticon for the weight loss and GERD management.

Love those pictures. The hike sounds wonderful.

Your blog has a different things. First of all, the news about your mom are really good. She is eating and that's what counts. emoticon God bless her and your family.

You are showing us how to live life fully even when stressed. You are taking care of yourself, keeping your goals clear, hiking with friends. emoticon For such a great example. emoticon

AND GERD management! I have it too but not as bad as you and diet makes such a difference but many people don't want to do the work. emoticon

Thanks for sharing and I hope your week is peaceful and joyous. emoticon

More beautiful wild flowers -- and I also loved the picture of you with the group you took hiking! I don't think I could cross a river without falling into it, I am very impressed only one person fell!
I am glad you can go to California once a month to see your mom, yet I can imagine it must seem very little when you know she is in pain and unwell again.
