DDP Yoga: Day 1

Thursday, July 18, 2013

Well, just finished with day 1's Diamond Dozen workout! My husband agreed to do it with me! I really wanted him to do the breathing (that's a problem he's always had, he takes shallow, quick breaths all the time).

He wasn't able to complete everything, but I encouraged him to modify, take his time, and do what he could. He did the first five poses, and had to take a break. I did the rest, and he did safety zone (child's pose) with me to relax. I think his problem is he tends to hold his breath, so I told him to really focus on his breathing when it gets hard (that's what my yoga instructors used to tell me.)

I'm so proud of him. This is hard for him, because he's had almost no physical activity in years! I wish he'd let me take day 1 photos. ;)

I'm really impressed with the dynamic resistance. It feels like tai chi, with the focus you need, the engagement in the muscles, takes a lot of focus! I was proud to say I did full pushups on slow burn, although the last one was h-a-r-d!

I'm sitting up at my desk a little straighter.

I'm really excited about this program!

    Wow! Great job, Hubby!
You are totally right on the breathing making the poses a bit easier, but he got through five of them and that is a great start!
Congrats to you too, on getting through the whole thing! Glad to see you are enjoying it...you deserve it!

Well, I would like to congratulation you DH for doing this. I think mine would just as soon die before he even tried. He has never been flexible and it is getting worse as he ages. I have tried talking to him about doing some daily stretches, but you know the saying about "making a horse drink". So a BIG emoticon to your DH !

Great that you're enjoying it. Wonderful that your husband is joining in! Could you help him learn how to breathe outside of doing the exercises? When someone lays down, a hand on their belly, and trying both belly breathing and chest breathing they can learn to feel the difference. Have him do that for a few minutes to connect to his breathing, then maybe graduate to a less strenuous exercise, such as using some dumbbells, where he can learn to breathe out when the muscle is tightening and in when the muscle is relaxing. If he does each for just five minutes before exercising it could help teach him... that is, if he's up for learning it.
