Gluten Free Unapologetically, Birthday Edition

So... I take a 6 month hiatus and post twice in one day. Such is life.
Tonight was my dear sister in law's birthday. I love birthdays. You get to see family you don't see often, buy gifts and see someone open them, and if you don't have celiac, eat cake!
No cake for me tonight. Or chicken strips. Or meatballs. Or cornbread. Yeah, I had to check and make sure on the last two. Sneaky meatballs and cornmeal!! Good thing I looked. To make it worse, my mother in law had been kind enough to have the meatballs for me, but thank goodness I checked the package and saw the breadcrumbs hiding out in there.
I used to cheat at functions like these. I used to feel guilty that I needed different food than what was being offered. I used to apologize for the inconvenience and oddity. :(
But tonight was different. I'm a 32 year old woman who teaches young adults with disabilities to be self-determined self-advocates. I'm grown. I'll explain my needs out of courtesy to the hosts, but I'm not apologizing for this anymore. I'm not going to beat myself up because my intestines will go into a rage if I eat a little bit of breading on a chicken strip. I sure as heck ain't trying to pick apart a slab of ice cream cake to avoid the cookie crumbs in the center just because someone bought it.
I'll never expect my family to adapt their get together for me... but I will adapt to make sure I stay safe and well. My health is worth more than appeasement, pride, or etiquette.
And I feel great about finally coming to terms with that. Amen.
