Week 1 Done - results and thoughts

Friday, July 05, 2013

I started eating clean and strict, mostly paleo/primal last friday june 28. I weighed in at 157.4 this morning, which equates to a 3.2lb loss. This is good. However, I was down 4lbs on Monday, and a total of 5 on Tuesday, so I am a little dissappointed that I seem to have 'gained back' 2 pounds over the past 3 days. hmph.

I know I should be happy with the overall loss, as I am in this for the long run. And, here is where people would say to just weigh yourself once a week. I am a numbers girl, so I like keeping track daily. The best thing to do is stop and think about why my weight might be up, instead of continuing downward. Actually, the best thing to do is to just keep keeping on, and to be patient and trust the process. I'll do that. But, I'm also going to think about what I did that may have contributed to the "gain" (it's only temporary, I know).

I ate more fruit than normal (watermelon, a peach, a few bites of pineapple). I also ate heavier dinners than normal (usually just a piece of meat and veggies, but I guess last night and the night before I had more meat than usual). Also, last night I had 2 ears of corn, when normally I won't eat any. I mean, they feed corn to fatten up the cows. And, corn sure isn't paleo... But, it was the 4th, and if that's the worst of my eating over the past week, then I will take it. Because, I really did well! I have had zero alcohol (well I had a sip of Dean's beer yesterday to taste it, but that was it), zero sweets, zero breads, chips, candy, etc. I have been really diligent with my eating. However, I could stand to work on my portions. Also, yesterday we never really sat down to a real meal until around 730pm... I 'grazed' on beef jerky, watermelon, some nuts, a dried fruit snack (oh, DUH, there's a crapload of carbs I didn't need....duh...), and a few cheese sticks. Then, at my sister-in-law's, I ate a million carrots and hummus (which I brought, yay! otherwise, it was crackers, salsa, and chips), then for dinner it was a burger with cheese, no bun, ketchup (not paleo... full of sugar... need to quit that...), 2 ears of corn (bad for you), and some tomato and mozzarella salad. Pretty good day overall, but obviously room for improvement.

So, I'll go into this weekend being more AWARE of what I'm eating. Say NO to grazing! Sit down and eat!

Can't wait to see how I do in another week. This was a great blog for me, because I identified a few areas where I slipped up. I am excited to improve and see where I am in another week. I'm hoping to be down another 2 pounds by next week, which will put me halfway to my 6-week goal. From there, a half pound a week is realistic... of course, I'd be excited to see more, but based on my past history with weight-loss, a half-pound is realistic. :)

I used to weigh myself daily
    ...and then I went crazy!

So, I weighed daily for a while and discovered that I was notoriously the lightest on Mondays (of all days!) So... that became my official weigh-in day!
Now I only weigh once a week (if that! Lately it's been more like twice a month!) but it's been good at keeping me from going too crazy with the numbers! I'm a numbers geek too! (Not to mention knowing you have to step on a scale on Monday, keeps me in control for my weekends!!!)

There is more important things in life to think about daily then the number on the scale!!!

Congrats on your loss so far!!!

I think weight fluctuates so do what the other commenter says - average it!

Good news is that the holiday is over...for both of us. We a lot of good choices with a few not-so-good ones thrown in. I always think it won't hurt just this once...and I'm always wrong. Not feeling so good last night and today. Back to healthy eating without compromise.

One of the low carb regulars here, SIMPLEMAW, has a neat method. She weighs daily, but then adds up 7 days worth of weigh-ins and takes the average as her weekly weight. That way you only have to be concerned if your average weight is up from the previous week, not any individual days. Weight loss is not at all the same as fat loss, and it's fat loss that we all care about. That is going to be a very gradual change, not a big 2 pound up or down difference. Two pounds is likely either water or intestinal contents, or both.
