Chickens (with pictures!)

Thursday, July 04, 2013

Well, the planets finally aligned, and both the chicken coop and the chickens have arrived safely!

They're a year old - got them from a friend who raises chickens - and they came with names. :)

Left to right, they're Rudy, Reba, Ruby and Roxie (my friend names chickens that she keeps from the same year with names that begins with the same letter. We did the same thing when we raised sheep, but I never knew people did that with chickens, too!)

The coop is wonderful - they get locked into the house itself every night (not just the run) and come out clucking and cooing in the morning. They started laying within two days of getting to their new home, so I guess they're satisfied with the accommodations...and the eggs are amazing.

We're still in the process of teaching the dog how to act...well, more specifically, how NOT to act, but she's bright, and she'll figure it out. :)

I've wanted to have chickens again for quite a while, so this is really fun! Got to go now to make some eggs for our brunch!

PS - Some folks have asked what breed they are: Blue Laced Wyandottes. :)

    Love your chicken coop!!

I have 11 chickens that I have had for over a year now...started with 14 but my husband's hunting dog got out one day and got ahold of 3 before I could save them.

Mine are White Leghorns and 2 chickens and love the fresh eggs...I prefer not to have a rooster though!! emoticon

I love two things today - the background photo with the lizard and this wonderful blog! I started smiling just reading the title. How wonderful to live in the country. emoticon I am sure your dog thinks you got him some new, moving toys! emoticon

My maternal grandmother raised chickens and reading your blog reminded me of her. I grew up in the city and one of my dreams is to live in the country someday. Happy 4th of July! emoticon emoticon

Interesting! WE had a book news story here on CAnada Day because some people walking in a park saw a Canada goose with fishing line wrapped around it's legs... They showed people trying to catch, after they did finally coerce people to help, and finally someone caught it by throwing a blanket over it and falling on top of it... Anyway, they got the line off and goose got away...

Now, when I grew up on a farm, we would use a coathanger we made a crook into to catch them by their leg.... (just a hint)
