Year One Done...

One year on and I am very grateful for all the help and sparkiness SparkPeople has given to me. emoticon Last June, after an operation DH had, I was searching the web emoticon for kale recipes emoticon and up popped the SP site emoticon . Intrigued, I checked it out and realized I was the one who needed to join emoticon . My issues as I viewed them then, were insomnia emoticon , some extra old age pounds emoticon , balance issues emoticon after having broken my foot the previous June, and procrastination emoticon emoticon .

Insomnia: The SP articles were most helpful. I have tried to have a better evening
“routine”. We don’t have television, but I was using the computer emoticon until just before turning in for the night. emoticon And when I do that, still, I sleep less well. It must be the light and “flickering” that tell my brain it is daytime. emoticon I also learned to go to bed later (when I am sleepy) and to get up if I’m not sleeping rather than lying there waiting. We keep our room cool emoticon and dark emoticon , so those were a good part of the plan already. Another thing I realized that I had to do was cut down on bread-type carbs emoticon emoticon emoticon and eat yogurt emoticon daily.

Extra old age pounds: My weight had crept up little by little since my last big weight loss push in 1998-99. I was a bit shocked getting on the scale emoticon to realize that it was “the last twenty” pounds I needed to lose, rather than ten. So with SP’s helpful daily tracking; healthy living articles on nutrition, fitness and wellness and lots of great encouragement from fellow Sparkies, emoticon I made my goal on not only weight, emoticon but a healthy balance of exercise emoticon emoticon , food intake emoticon , and at least eight glasses of water a day emoticon ! Now I did not meet all these goals right off. Instead, I worked on weight and a bit better fitness plan first. Then I pushed myself on the water (I used to drink maybe one or two glasses of anything daily…I made up the liquid in pounds of carrots!! emoticon emoticon ) DH and I have decided to have three or four days of veggies only and three or four days of meat with veggies each week for our main meal at 2-4 in the afternoon. That way we can alternate and be certain that we both are eating a healthy diet. He has always been a meat, meat, and potatoes person and I, a truck load of veggies and bread one. He has helped me really limit my breadstuff intake and encouraged me to eat more meat. I have added many new veggies to his nutrition. Together, we’ve got an elderly plan emoticon . Now when we splurge, we try to go immediately back onto that healthy program...Except that I messed up over the past two week emoticon emoticon …but have made it back on track…just today! emoticon

Balance issues: In February, 2012, right after my birthday, I joined a new tap dancing class with some friends emoticon . We have kept it up weekly, learning new steps and songs emoticon as we go along. None of us had tapped before (except) our “teacher” who is one of us. Anyway, practicing the pieces at home, at first in preparation for little performances and then for fitness, I am so glad to find my left foot getting stronger. Also I have learned to stop looking at my feet when I walk, but rely more on my brain now. My posture is gradually improving emoticon because of all this, too. I do yard work and gardening emoticon , as well as heavy cleaning/lifting and digging for upper body “workouts” emoticon . I still have to get a regular strengthening program going. emoticon

Procrastination: Well this has to be one of my main goals during this coming year, emoticon because I have just barely scratched the surface on this one. SP has helpful motivation emoticon articles. Many, many Spark friends emoticon emoticon have been giving me excellent advice and are nudging me along. But…”manyana”…always “Tomorrow, I’ll tackle that paper chase project.” As you can see from my ‘ticker’ there is just one month left to Big B-day…That means that before the family and friends begin to arrive, the memorabilia must….Oh my…big changes are needed in me here!! emoticon
