Weighing daily vs. weekly: how's that workin' for ya?

Saturday, June 29, 2013

I have been weighing daily since mid-May.
Before that, I was weighing myself sporadically since October.
I lost/gained/lost/gained (etc) the same 5 pounds from October to May, and I was one pound ABOVE my starting weight when I commenced the daily weighing.
From mid-May to now, I lost 10 pounds below my October starting weight (sorta counts as 11 pounds, really).
So, giving this the "how's that workin' for ya?" test, I'd say that for me, daily weighing supports my performing the habits that lead to weight loss. I have frequently read that weighing only once a week is a better plan, but our personal experience tells us more than a rule of thumb.
Hypothesis, testing, result. Scientific method for the win!
["How's that workin' for ya?" is a catchphrase from Dr. John Berardi of Precision Nutrition...I don't know if he coined the phrase, but that's where I first heard it. And I found Precision Nutrition through Dr. Krista Scott-Dixon of Stumptuous fame.]

I weigh daily because I need to keep track for my heart failure. The fluctuations can be frustrating at times. Occasionally I feel like I have to lose the same pound two or three times. On the suggestion of a fellow sparker I stopped recording gains in my spark log, I only record losses now. The other thing I have done is pick one day as my "weigh in day".
I use Saturdays as my day for checking my weekly progress. So, even though I'm weighing every day, I'm trying to keep a broader progressive perspective on it.

It is great you found what works for you. I get mad at the school when I look at it too much and it isn't doing what I want it to do. I hop on the scale...give it a few choice words and then I won't weigh myself for a while again.
I am trying to not put everything into the scale at this point. For me it works the opposite. I am glad you found what works for you! emoticon
