Closer, Ever Closer....

Friday, June 28, 2013

In a little less than 12 hours from now, I'll be on vacation. Finally. It can't come too soon. One of my coworkers is already on vacation and heading to Myrtle Beach. He was in need of vacation even more than me.

We have two rookies in our department. One has been working with us for just less than a year and is finishing training on first shift before coming to second. The other has been with us just over a year. He's the one heading south. Both of them are good guys. They're smart and will work out well. What they don't understand is that you may get trained on this job in 6 months or so, but it takes 3 years or more to learn it. Both of them, when told of something incredibly stupid that one of the veterans have done in the past (and we all have done incredibly stupid things on the job) have responded with, "I'll never do that.". Ah, those famous last words.... The guy on first shift has almost been killed twice (not his fault, either time, but just a reminder that, in spite of very impressive improvements in safety since I've started working there and a serious "safety first" attitude by our boss and his boss, we have a dangerous job.) Then came yesterday....

Both of the rookies had a rough day. They both got their butts chewed for doing things that they had been warned about doing. Things that are, to repeat a phrase, incredibly stupid. Things that they had been warned about in the form of veterans saying, "I did this and bad things happened, don't make the same mistake I did." There is something oddly amusing when your advice is ignored and things go wrong as a result. Nothing serious, but highly embarrassing. And entertaining...for us.

So anyway, one rookie is on his way to South Carolina, the other one is staying home, grateful to be away from the ever present judgment of 2 uncompromising bosses. And me, I'm 11.5 hours from my vacation.

Saturday and Sunday will be spent finishing the move from my apartment. Then, I shall start a week of only getting around by bike. This won't be any preplanned attempt to get back to the bike and into bike commuting, though it will work out like that. It will be a response to my son's car breaking down and him using mine until his gets fixed. Fortunately, although life has tossed Thing One and I some lemons in the form of his car breaking down, life also tossed us some sugar in the form of me having a week off and bikes to commute with. Thus, lemonade shall be made. I just have to get through the next 10 hours at work without getting chewed out by my boss. Stupid screw ups are entertaining when someone else commits them, not when I do....
