On the road again

Friday, June 28, 2013

I have been coming to Greece with my husband for 20 years and finally last night I drove somewhere for the first time. I don't know how to drive a stick shift car which was what my father-in-law has. I have tried to learn (even took driving lessons in the summer) but with the crazy traffic here and all the hills I never had the confidence to go out. I drove with my husband a few times but that was more even more stress! So last week we bought a car with automatic transmission. We got a great deal on it due to the financial crisis--lots of people are parting with their cars. It is a Ford Maverick which is the European version of the Ford Escape, the car I have at home. The kids wanted to go to a movie last night and so I drove them. It was only a 5 minute drive from my house and so a good first trip. I imagine it sounds completely pathetic but I was so proud of myself. I usually feel so trapped here at the house and now I feel the world opening up.

I totally understand. I had to learn how to drive a stick-shift back in the 80's because I was going to be spending a month in California with kids I used to baby sit years ago. I learned ho on the back farm roads in a junky, nine year old Chevette!! It was very scary and it took me a month to learn.

I did not have to drive on the opposite side of the road, but the shifting thing is traumatic in your home town, let alone a different place. I drove from San Jose, CA to San Diego and back while I was there, plus daily driving with my 6 year old all over San Jose.
I think you will enjoy your vacation there much more now!! Go out, get lost, discover new places and people!!
