Looking for the Clutter

Tuesday, June 25, 2013

I love this quote:

"Clutter isn't just the stuff in your closet. It's anything that gets between you and the life that you want to be living, whether its in your home, in your head, in your heart, or on your hips." -Peter Walsh

Often I need to stop and figure out what is getting in my way. When I am stuck, bored, or upset often there is something cluttering my view of what I might be doing to be engaged in life in a happier way.

It can be my desk...who can write when you can't find the surface? It can be my kitchen...who wants to cook with dishes stacked up by the sink? It can be my head...who can see a problem clearly if my head is full of unhelpful thoughts about how I might fail, cause a stir, hurt someone's feelings...

So here's to a day of looking for clutter and going after it. That's what I'm up to today.

How easy it is to think of clutter as only closet stuff. To expand on your blog, what is in my thought closet? When something some said to me or something I read comes knocking at my thought closet, do I just open the door and let it in? Every thought has to knock on my thought closet to gain entry. What am I hanging in my thought closet? When a lie knocks on my door, do I let it in? I need to capture every thought and once that thought agrees with the truth, I can let it in. I engaged in a metaphysical course about 14 yrs. ago and studied it for about 7 years. This idea of clutter was addressed throughout the course. Both inner and outer life are healthier and happier when uncluttered. One type of inner clutter is living with thoughts of the past always running in the background - hurtful things people said or did, etc. It takes awareness to catch these thoughts but with practice it gets easier. You can't push a negative thought out of your mind, any more than you can push darkness out of a room. You CAN fill your mind with positive thoughts, so there's no room left for the old "negative stuff", like filling a room with light.

I've been doing this, and doing that and then doing this other thing...all day long today. Yep, I cleared out a lot of clutter. You know what I've been thinking about???? ALL THOSE COOKBOOKS I own! Could they be CLUTTER??? Could they just be a part of my "obsession" with food??? Hmmmmmmmmm, maybe time for some/most of them to go too...
